Another friend of mine is now interested in taking up golf but on a real tight budget.  He's been looking on eBay at Prosimmon and RAM full sets for under £100.

Anyone got recommendations based on sets they have bought?

He's not sure how seriously he will take it (or how long term) so does not want to invest in anything more expensive.  He's after irons, woods and a bag as part of a set.

Cheers

If you can find a set at the right price, have a look at a set of Hippo OSIV. Has a sensible 11 degree driver, a surprisingly good 3 wood and hybrid and some pretty reasonable irons as well. I have a mate who still uses the woods and putter out of my old set.

Hi i brought a  package set of clubs  from american golf.  Nicklaus paid 350 pound for a full set driver 3 wood 2 hybrids and 5- Sw they are great clubs been playing with them for 18 Months now have tried loads of more expensive clubs from my pro shop and none of them feel as good and are as forgiving. I bet you could find some of them on ebay at a resonable price

TA6's are supposed to be pretty easy to hit, and you're getting a decent manufacturer.  These look to be a bit of a bargain - Cleveland TA6

If it were me I'd forget the driver for now and stick with a three wood or even just irons until he has a feel for whether he wants to stick with it.  Any cheap bag will do for what he wants

Has he factored in golf shoes, gloves, balls etc?

I have a set for sale....Good starter set:

Bay Hill clubs, with stand bag....all you need to start really. See the advert with pics:

http://www.trade-it.co.uk/category/for-sale-golf/region/w-uk-south-west-avon-bath/FullBayHillBigKahunaGolfSetNearlynew-1003640.html

and just to mention they are standard club size - not an inch longer as stated in the thread/advert...i just measured them against my clevelands.

My forum thread is here:

I'm sure i could be talked down in price a bit to post them to your friend for £100. They are next to new. I have a (expensive) habit of buying nice gear the second i get into something, whether that be football boots, motorcyle helmets, or now golf clubs!

Where abouts are you in the country?

Any questions, please ask

Paul

I bought the Prosimmon Icon from ebay, £97 for everything. The driver/3 wood/5 wood aren't anything to write home about, very whippy, but the hybrids (19* hybrid will get you 200yds off the tee, good enough for starting out with) and the irons are decent enough. I would recommend the set for £100. A mate of mine also bought the same set, he's got down from 28 to 14 using them so they can't be all bad.

Good customer service too, i broke the driver first time down the range (split the top cover, manufacturing fault they said) sent an email sunday night at 9pm, got a reply at 9:15pm saying that a new one would be in the post the following morning, it arrived tuesday morning and has been fine since. Set is currently being used by another mate who is just getting into the game and he's doinf fine with them also.

If buying new under £100 you will not find better than  these for more info don't know if there still available in reg though you can usually pick up other items wood bag for under a fiver , but for a package cheap these ram's are a decent set

Can't answer you question fully UA as I've not owned these clubs and dont really know of anybody who has, but these Petrons on this site below are a bargain at that price, I've not really heard a bad word said about Petron gear either, unless someone knows different!
