I'm thinking of buying some new golf shoes, the ones that look like trainers. I would like to know if anyone has bought these and whether they give good stability, and how are they received at your clubs? I like the Adidas and Nike ones on the market. Any views??

They are fine for "resort golf" in Florida, South Africa conditions but for serious golf they are just too much like trainers with spikes on them. They don't offer much in the way of lateral support, waterproofing and resistance to twisting.

If you have a reasonably athletic swing and use your lower body to generate power through it, then they will be completely useless. If however, you are a gentle swinger with a slow swing speed, you might just get away with them. They are comfortable for walking between shots is how I would rate them!

Had a pair of these last season and just bought a pair of Footjoy AQLs. The trainer style is great for summer months when weather is dry etc but I found come any water and they leak like mad. It doesn't have to be rain. Went looking for a ball in the rough the second week I had them and the dew made my feet absolutely soaking and that was at the third hole. Had a pair of Footjoy greenjoys and they last 2/3 years easy and kept my feet dry whatever the weather. Buy a pair of decent golf shoes, with footjoys being one of those, and you won't go wrong.

I had a pair of Nikes when I was abroad and loved them.   Great for holiday golf with a pair of shorts, but as everyone else has mentioned, there's not really any advantages with the trainer-type, only disadvantages.

You mention stability, as amaboknaai says that's defo not a plus point .

Silverbullet.
Adidas Tour 360.
Comes in half sizes and different widths.
Blingy enough for most, but a damn good shoe in winter and the newer 360's have a great sole.

Great advice from everyone. Seems as though its a daft option to buy them then. I want something that is going to look half decent with shorts, but if they're gonna get dirty and wet at the slightest bit of crappy weather, and they don't support an athletic swing, then its just not worth it! My current FJ's are looking a little jaded, so I might check out the Adidas Tour 360's! Cheers!

Too late now I suppose. I never buy anything esle. Dead comfy. Got Hi tech ones a few years ago like walking about in slippers. Currently using Nike. If they get dirty, CLEAN THEM. Put a bit of shoe polish on, buff up, hey presto they look like new.

Take a look at the Footjoy Athletic? Directgolf may still have some for £40 or something. Think they'd be a happy compromise?

I'm far too lazy to clean shoes! I don't mind cleaning the  mud off leather, but these fabric style trainers would get ingrained with crap and look rubbish after a few rounds I reckon. I've decided to get some nice black leather FJ's to go with trousers and some Adidas Tour 360's to wear with shorts and my October trip to Turkey!!

Had a fancy pair of Puma with moulded studs last year - they were fine until we had a bit of rain mid round...........then i looked like Ray Quinn on a Sunday Evening, until the 8th tee where my groin popped...

Eight weeks of no golf & missed out on a charity day at Drayton Park....

A nice new pair of Footjoys arrived for christmas....

I've just got some Footjoy Athletics reduced to £40 in my local pro shop and they are great.

No rain leakage when walking on wet grass, but I havn't tried them in the rain yet though....!
