Why do players not wear a glove while putting? I think it's supposed to be for "feel" and touch on the green, but why should that be different when chipping around the green, or even 50-100 yards out? I don't wear my glove while putting, but only because I see that pros don't... not really the right reason!

Plenty of players remove their gloves for green side chips too! I often find that trying to apply logic to golf is a futile exercise! Just do what feels right, not cos youve seen it on telly!

Fair point, though it's always a good idea to try out what they do, just in case anything rubs off...

One of my instructors (a brilliant old scottish bloke - oozes credibility) told me a while back that the reason people started doing this was in the 50s Arnold Palmer (who I'm told was the king of fashion in those days), started the trend, and everybody copied along. It's stuck until this day. Apparently there is no benefit to this other than psychological.

I tried it for a while (heck I'll try anything if it makes me whole more putts), but found it was just one more thing to fiddle about with instead of thinking about your shot. I guess if would be easier if I didn;t have to carry my own bag, like the pros don't..

How often do you guys use a glove before changing to a new one?

One of my friends just told me that he has been using the same glove for (get ready for this) two years!!!!

Hmmmmmm... due to the reasons that Bob mentions in the article (worn thumb and heal of the palm) my gloves lasts no more than a few months. I do carry 3-4 pairs in my bag should they get torn, wet or otherwise unuseable.

Oh, and I dont wear my glove putting, and most often also not when chipping. For me it feels more comfortable.

I sometimes wear it, and sometimes don't.... so it's hard to say how often I change it. But I reckon I only get through about 1 glove a year!!
Although having said that, I've only been averaging about one round per month.

For me, taking my glove on/off depends on the weather rather than the shot.

If it's a hot day, then I tend to take my glove off after most shots and I don't bother wearing it for putting - just to keep my hand cool.

In the winter I wear gloves on both hands which never come off at all, infact on really cold days I wear thermal mits over the top of the gloves (which of course I remove before each shot!!) :)

Pros tend to take their glove off because they say it gives them more feel. However, the main reason is that they spend at least two hours a day on the putting practice green and it's a bit daft wearing a glove for that.
So why wear one on the practice range? Presumably because 3-4 hours there - and the friction of hitting full shots - would tend to create blisters, without the protection of a glove.
Practising, playing, putting - I wear a glove all the time - but they do tend to wear out three or four times during the summer. That's when they make up a second-hand selection in a plastic bag in my bag for winter spares.
