Recently i have noticed several people mention an aversion to the chipping implment ? Why is this, surely a club is a club. I was even thinking of trying one, but as my 8 iron seems to be doubling up as my utility/get me out of trouble/chipping bone, i've not really needed to bother. Got pretty good at the ol 8 iron chip to the flag, but thats beside the point. Why the big down on chippers. im intersted to know
Also does anyone here (dare) own up to owning/using one, and which type/make.

Hi Darryl, I've got one and find it very usefull, but do take a lot of stick when i take it out the bag. I always struggled with little chip shots around the fringe of the green but not anymore, if i took an iron there was always a chance of not even reaching the green or bombing 30ft past the pin, but with the chipper the tricky little chip shots are usually within 4 or 5ft of the pin, which in turn has saved me alot of shots and is what were all looking for. I paid about £6 for mine of e-bay, which isn't alot of money for a club these days. As for the people who give me all the abuse, i personally think that there just jealous because they don't have one. Ha-Ha.

Nout wrong with them but if you learn to chip with every club from 7i down you have a lot more options and space in the bag for another club. My personal favourites for chipping are 8i and 24* Fli-hi.

I Think chippers anounce to the world you are extremely poor around the greens.
Fairway woods/resue clubs do the same job if you grip down the shaft, but unlike chippers they can also be used to spank the ball 200+ yards.

I think chippers announce to the world you are extremely poor around the greens...... BUT recognise this fact and have taken action against it so to improve your scores.
Getting down in two from around the green is the biggest factor on improving your golf score. So although used predominantly by higher handicappers good on a golfer who decides to put one in their bag.

i use one of those slippery frogs, got it off ebay for £20. Took it out for the first time this weekend and have to say it worked wonders. It's staying in my bag !

Just a bit of Golf snobbery Darryl. I say if it works for you and is legal under R&A then fine, especially if you use it well and really tick off the golf snobs (he he!)

I use one from the fringe but as I improve with my wedges I will probably stop and replace it with another wedge, 9 out of 10 I only require 1 putt after using it.
I think I seen a 2 way chipper for both LH and RH players which could be very useful can't remember where though.

yeah Bogeyman I've got one of them, a Golden Goose Seaside Special putter!!

 You are all big Jessies!
Get yer wedges out and play proper golf ! I want to see Phil Mick flop attempts from everyone, even the 28'ers!!!
sorry, still feeling cantankerous after a tiring weekend ;)

Got one I only use when on winter greens - better than the putter

_of_18th_n_berwick.JPG) Darryl, you hit the nail on the head with your first post! Why carry one when there are so many other options for playing that shot? (i.e, every iron in the bag , plus your lofted woods!)
Your can chip with your 8 iron and , but I bet you would play your 150 yard approach to the green with a chipper!
Snobbery? Nuts! Practicality... Deffo!

They announce to the world that you are extremely poor around the greens....Hmmmmmm.
Cavity backed irons, rescue clubs,2 ball putters, huge headed drivers designed to keep the ball in play despite a dodgy swing etc must announce to the world that you are truely a great golfer then.....
Your score at the end of the round announces to the world the level at which you play golf not whats in your bag.If it works and knocks shots off your game then use one.I used one as a begginer and it helped me by making it one less thing to worry about at that time but as i improved i moved away from it and have never gone back, but it did the job at the time.
Almost every club going these days are designed to make the game easier so no more shame IMO using a chipper than any other game improving club.
