Ping G2 Iron Dilemma

I have a set of MX-23's that have been in the bag for 8 months now, which is some record believe me. I hit the MX-23's well, love the sweet forged feel and ease of use, great distance. The one downside to these irons is that I find the PW a little large and clumsy around the greens and I also find them difficult to hit low and punchy into the wind. Apart from those two little concerns I'm very happy.

A friend of mine has come up with a 2 month old set of G2's which he is selling for a steal at £300. They are in great condition and are red spot, which is my Ping colour code. The only other thing is the grips are aqua (1/64") undersize, which do feel a little strange as I normally play standard size Tour Velvets on all my clubs. I was surprised but you really can tell they feel thinner than standard grips.

I've taken the plunge knowing I can get at least my money back on ebay but I'm the only person I know who isn't that impressed. Granted, they are easy to hit, but no more so than my 23's. I seem to be very hit and miss with the sweetspot and don't find the feel too good on centre hits either.

All the other G2 users out there, I'd like to know whether to stick with them. The question is, do they take time to adjust to?

I'm usually a first impressions type-of-guy, and had no problems dialling straight into my Mizunos (I am a 10 handicapper with my iron play not being the strongest part of my game). I know it's a decision that no-one else can make for me but I'd like some advice as everything I hear about G2's is great but I'm just not getting it at the moment. I really want to give the G2's a fair trial.

Well all i can say is, When i first Got my Cleveland irons, I couldnt Hit them well at all, a Good hour on the range resulted in many Mishits, Shanks, Just plain Wrong Shots that felt Terrible.. Now if id been demoing these irons i would have gave up but seeing as id purchased them.. I had to stick with em.. Going into the 2nd hour I started to adjust and by the Third hour I loved them... Posted this Earlier but played my 1st round with the new irons last Sunday and Knocked 10 strokes off my game... All I can say is Give em Time, I wouldnt change these irons now for anything.. I suspect if you get used to your new irons you will feel the same!

Personal preference Warren I've also hit the G2's but find them harsh & clunky -

Get a 46* Miz Wedge to replace the large PW.
Surely the Ping PW is just as cumbersome?

Warren - may be worth parting with £300 and giving them a go only for the fact you know you can get that amount (and more ?) back for them if they don't suit - as Paul says give them a good try out and see what transpires

I personally didn't like them or to put it more correctly , there was nothing about them that made me want to swap from using my current Ping ISI model - they are better than (IMO) the I3's - but what isn't ???!!! - but still nothing earth shattering - can't see you'll notice any great advantage over the MX-23's

good point by Big Al as well - ditch the PW & SW that come with Ping sets (and most other game improver clubs for that matter) and invest in proper PW , AW , SW ..... ie: Titleist , Mizuno , Cleveland , et al

my ISI wedge and sand wedge have had 9 holes use from the day I bought them (4 years ago) - saw that weak hyperbolic loopy wedge flight you get with these things and realised they're good for 'nowt !

Paul. I'm pretty much decided on the G2's now I think. They're on ebay as of yesterday. I can't seem to dial into them at all.

I had a really long range session at the weekend and hit both sets of irons side-by-side with a variety of shot types including full shots, pitches, punches etc and the Mizunos are head and shoulders IMHO above the G2's. I don't really know what made me think of trying something else.

As for the wedges, I've always had a sand wedge from an alternative company to my irons. I've got a Mizuno Black Ox at the moment, along with a 60* Cleveland Gunmetal lob wedge that's been in the bag for almost 2 years now. As for a PW, I've usually used whats come with the iron set, and been happy in the past. It's just that this MX-23 PW seems "clunky" and a bit big for the rest of the set. I'm considering ordering an MP-30 PW from Mizuno. Mmmmm ;-)

I had a set of G2's, swapped to MX23's - no comparison. Reckon Ping should leave the brick on the end of a rod to Callaway.

Im certainly no expert but i hit some ping G2 today at a demo, both the 460 driver and the G2 HL irons and i could not belive how forgiving of my crappy shots they were. and i hit further with less effort.
