 I have 1/3/5 Callaway S'Head Plus... which I love to bits...and not good with a 3 iron.
Thinking of getting the S'Head plus 7 (have a cheap Donnay which is a bit iffy)
Good review of 7 woods in Today's Golfer... and S'Head gets 9/10...
However it states if you get the 7 don't bother with the 5 as in their opinion there is not much difference.
So at £199 (unless anyone knows where I can get it cheaper -paid £175 for the 1/3/5/each (Graphite) at Nevada Bob's.......would this 7 be a waste of money as I have the 5. What do you think please? Could be my Xmas pressie from the famile... It's bugging me this!

I can only advise from a ladies point of view Geoff, but I agree with the survey.
I find only a small difference in distance between the 7 and the 5. For me, the main difference is the versitility of the 7 - as well as off the fairway it can be used more easily in light rough and even out of bunkers. The 7 is also handy because of the height it sends the ball, which means it doesn't shoot through the green as far as it would with a 5, plus it's easier to hit.
I love my 7 wood. I'd have 1,3,7 in my bag and sell the 5 if need be.

Interesting. I gave up using my 3 wood on the fairway in favour of my 5 wood. Hit the 5 wood more consistantly. Was thinking about ditching the 3 wood for a 7 wood, but I guess if the distance you achieve is the same as a 5 there's not much point. Geoff - I'll let you take the gamble, and learn from what you find out - OK?

Just to be contrary, I've given my Fat Shaft 4-iron a run out in place of an aging TaylorMade Burner 5-wood and keep my Steelhead 7-wood for long par-3s needing a soft landing and for dodgy lies in the rough. Hands ahead I can also punch it through the wind and use it for the occasional chip around the green. I notice on Tour Sam Torrance and Gary Evans find the Steelhead 7-wood a reliable good friend, too.

...so, by all accounts it seems like you'll just HAVE to have one of those 7-wood jobbies Geoff.
Go on, treat yerself.
|
 |
 Argggh! Don't Suzanne! I know I am going to anyway..just can't justify..oh well!
(Mind you I think that nice Mr Parky should do us both out of our misery and purloin the requisite clubs from those nice Lady Tour golfers!)

..With benefit of hindsight I think I should have gone Driver, 4plus,7 wood-but at least if I have 4 woods they will last longer I suppose! G

Check out the lofts on C'way website (if they're still there !). There's 2 degrees difference betw. the 5 and 7 metals (18 & 20) Hence the advice and (certainly for the amateur) no appreciable difference in length betw. the 2 ! How about a 9, 23 degrs ??
Better hurry, new series coming out soon !
|
 |
9 wood-didn't think of tht-what kind of distance could you expect with that? G
|
 |
I don't know what your normal distances / swing speed are Geoff, but for me an 18 degr goes about 210, so on that basis I guess 190 ish ?
|
 |
....Had a look at Nevada Bobs..probably still makes sense to go for the 7 I think...at least when I carry a half set it will be of more use. Thanks G

Geoff,Can I ask is the Callaway S/head a better club than the Callaway titainium Hawkeye, have you tried both ? is there much difference in price ?.
|
 |
Both are good but I prefer the Hawkeye - unfortunately it's getting on for twice the price of the Steelhead.

Hi trying to complete my set of supersteel irons. need to buy if possible, approach and sand wedge. Realise taylormade are not making these anymore, but would appreciate any and all help in buying these two items

Gave in today. Thought what's the point of a 21 handicapper spending (another!) £200 on a S'plus 7 Wood Callaway to add to the 1/3/5..which I will use most of the time. ..and give the 7 an oaccsional outing)
...On complete impulse passing through my pro shop I bought a & 7 Wood Radar PFT with a Proforce 75 Gold Low torque Stiff flex something or other tip (you know ...one of those bright yellow and blue jobbies!)
£65 ....better than the £200 for the Callaway...surley won't that make that much difference...but better than the £10 Donnay!
That'sit now...no more clubs (well until the next time ,actually the Radar Driver looked good!)
...anyone else heard or used these woods. I remember someone saying the shafts were good??
NB...anyone playiing a lot worse yet with change in weather?? Gone back to rubbish!

Geoff I to have been thinking of changing my ageing Ping Zing 5 wood for a C/way steelhead 5 or 7 wood,at the moment I'm living on the Costa del Sol, Spain and last week I attended a demo day at a local club and had the chance to try a new Wilson deep red fat shaft 7 wood and was very impressed but it was'nt the club that I was looking for so now I'm really confused. Has your seven wood made much difference to your'e game. I'm beging to think that the answer to this problem is to stay away from golf club shops and demo days and play with what you have in your'e bag and stick to it that way these problems would'nt arise.
