Alex, how old is your 5 wood? 21 degress used to be 5 wood loft, so about the same as a 3 iron for distance, ,maybe a bit longer. It used to be the club I would/could hit from anywhere; rough-tee-fairway. 18 degrees is now standard for 5 woods, so newer models will tend to go a bit further than older clubs. But not so good from a duff lie, so you need a 7 wood to do the same job nowadays.

23rd, how come it took you 6 years to reply to Alex's post

Is this the end for persimmon woods then???

I have a TM Rescue Fairway 7 wood (23 degree) and absolutely love it. Paid £20 for it off ebay. It is perfect for short par 4's off the tee. second shots on short par 5's and long par 3's are a doddle. It hits about 200 yards and usually straight. i don't carry my 3 or 4 iron anymore or my hybrid.

I've just bought a 7 wood head to go on my trust Aldila shaft with the new grip. All in 20 quid! (I love Thailand). I hit this club 220 yards of carry. I am not sure about the run on after that but if its set solid like the fitter said ( 2 hours but I'm giving it three) then I should have an answer for you this evening after I finish the back 9 at the army course. I played the front this morning. I tried a 5 wood on the par 5 and it convinced me, there is no point trying to look clever hitting irons belly out for 200+ yards when you can swing easy with a wood and add 20 yards reliably. I am going to have a field day with this little beauty! Back in blighty when I didn't really knwo what I was doing I was hitting my 7 wood anything from 120yards up to 200 because I trusted it. Feeling is everything to me. It felt controlable. A good attribute in a target sport.

I too have a Cobra 7 wood, but nobody is taking it out of my bag, its my goto club when things get awkward.. Hit it about 170 in the air, I also carry a Ping 9 wood and that is woderful over 160 yards.. If golf was all about Iron play I would give up!! well maybe not!! but you know what I mean..

No, I really don't know what you mean. If I could hit my 3 Iron squarely and reliably it should go as far as a 7 wood, right? I'd feel better going back to just Driver and Irons myself. I can't explain why very well. It just feels like woods give you too much help. When I see the ball flight of my shallow faced 7 wood and it goes pinging off about 230 yards I just feel like I am cheating. If it wasn't for the fact the bloke I played with today was a total bandit and kept trying to distract me with bets and innane chatter and other noise, I would have felt bad about using it. As it was on both Par 5s it gave me a superb approach chip from 250 yards out and 280 yards out. I couldn't have been happier with the shot unless I had played it with my 4i.

Heads of 7 woods aren't really that different from hybrids (of the same loft) are they? I've got a Yonex which I occasionally use in the winter for 190 yd shots. Shaft a bit longer though which gives a bit more on distance. Long live the 7 wood

Somchai, if your pinging them off your 7 wood 230 yards then I'm very impressed and you should stick with it, why would it feel like cheating ?
Greenfly, I have a feeling that Somchai is taking the p*** a little bit!! antone off 19 who can hit anything over 250 yds needs his things felt either cos he is a genuine 19 threfore he is having a go at some of the yardages laid down on this forum OR he really does hit it that far in which case he needs his things felt for not being lower, which is it Somchai???

tend to agree MTP, but was trying to be subtle, as I didnt want Boa or anyone saying I had an issue with a better golfer (Greenfly 21 UNoficial)

BEMUSED BY SOME OF THE YARDAGES QUOTED ON THIS SITE
Yes but doesn't Somchai live in Thailand where climate, atmospherics etc mean you do get more distance?
Plus hes playing on a course made of glass not grass !
