Have written a feature piece this week about the emergence of the 7-wood in pro golf.
Who else has got one? How good is it for the average golfer? How much did you spend and was it worth it?
Here's a chance to review your club and tell others what it means to you.

I've got a Hippo 7-wood. Paid about £35 for it last year. I use it from about 170-180 yards from the green. Don't use use my 3 or 4 iron from the fairway now.

On Sunday my tee shot was in light rough about 170 yards from the green on a short par 4. Couldn't see the green or flag 'cos of the sun low down and trees all around. You could see two big bunkers though and I was told 'just aim between the bunkers'. Took out my 7 wood and cracked it in the general direction. Couldn't see the ball in the air or where it landed. Walked up to the green and there it was, about 20 feet from the hole! I don't very often get a GIR on par 4s, so I was very pleased with that shot. (I was only 6 inches away from getting a birdie too!).

The only wood that I can hit with draw, to order, is my Cobra 'Gravity Back' 7 wood - the offset helps.

It's got a heavy little head and glides through all sorts of clag and gives me 3 iron yardage but more height.

£39 with a TT steel shaft - it was bought for the winter but is staying in the bag.

If you get 3-iron yardage with your 7 wood, how far do you hit your 5 wood? I always think of my 5 wood as being 3-iron distance.

By the way Al, next time I played after Brocket Hall I was bloody aweful. Played this weekend and was OK though.

I don't hit a three iron that well Alex so very rarely carry it. 4 iron sees me about 180 ish so 3 would be 190 I suppose.

5 wood 200+ depending whether off deck or a tee. I don't carry a 3 wood so can't make par 5's in two shots. :)

Mind you, this new driver helps.

Haven't played a lot since Brocket - been in Greece - they don't have many golf courses there.

I imagine that if you had kept the Brocket Hall game as your normal play your handicap should be low teens Alex - like you my game is OK one day, crud the next.

I bought a Donnay 7 wood for a tenner at the Mcarthur Glenn shopping centre in Bridgend (Alan knows it). Best value for money I have ever had. I get about 5 iron distance with it, but what I find it really good for is coming out of the rough. It doesn't dig in like an iron and gives a lot of confidence on difficult shots.
I would recommend people to try them.

On reading an article about the most versatile club in the bag, I bit the bullet and purchased a Callaway Steelhead 3 Steel shaft 7 wood......all I can say is WOW....3 and 4 iron are both sitting in the garage gathering dust......it is the only club I use from between 170 - 210 and plus it is the only club I seem to be able to draw or fade when I want to, the way it cuts through the rough also amazed me and the accuracy is pretty good as well.....try them they are worth it

Simon - how much was it? Any bargains out there (I also need to improve my long irons, so am looking at 7-woods)?

People seem talk about the 7 wood hitting the ball as far as a three iron. Maybe I don't hit the ball sweetly, but I reckon my 5 wood goes the distance of a three iron.

Am I a freak?

I paid 129 for it from Doug McClelland at Silvermere Golf Course, seems to be about the cheapest place to but the Callaway at the moment

I've been pondering whether to buy a 7 or even a 5 wood. I have trouble using my 3 wood of the deck. I find it difficult to control. Are they easier to use than a 3 wood.

I have no trouble with 3 iron, I was hitting that around 170 yards but now i seem to be getting over 200 yards regularly with it. Would a 7 or 5 wood give me any extra distance?

It all depends......I carry both a 5 Wood, graphite shaft and a 7 Wood steel shaft, believe it or I can hit my 7 Wood consistenly longer off of the deck than my 5.......again it is own preference and it is just what yo yourself get on with.....best advice is to try both and also different makes before you buy......If you look at it logically if you hit your 3 iron that far you wouldn't really need either, as all you would really be gaining would be height not length....

Versatility is the key, here. Most of us are hitting our second shots from the rough, because we're looking for length off the tee and (be honest) it rarely goes hand-in-hand with accuracy. 3 or 4-iron is near impossible to control from rough, so with par-4s not getting any shorter, it makes the 7-wood a better option from distance because of its loft and head shape. You can also use it at long par-3s and occasionally around the green. The 5-wood is less versatile in my opinion - I'd rather carry an extra Gap or Lob wedge.

I think the hard fairways are helping my distance at the moment so might try a 7 wood if it gives me the carry. Any recommendations, I have a Deep Red Driver and I'm inpressed with that. Has anyone tried the deep red fairway woods?

I agree with (always a good idea?) Bob. Additionally, the course you play most dictates whats in the bag. My home course has 2 par 3s over 200 yards (5 wood!) and several very long par 4s (5 wood second shot) and long par 5, where the 3 wood some times puts you in the bunjers by the green so you can lay up with the 5 wood! ALSO, you can almost do the same with the baffy from the off the fairway as on it!
