Iam looking to upgrade my irons presently from Titleist DCI 981 to the Mizuno MX 20. Does anyone presently play the new MX 20 and have any comments (recommendations) they can pass one. My Titleists presently have the Tri-spec "stiff" steel shaft fitted, would the standard Dynamic Gold steel shaft fitted to the MX 20 be ok or should be looking into upgrading to the optional Dynamic Gold or Rifle shafts. The intention is to have them custom fitted so any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated.

I don't play MX20 but would like to know how they compare with Comp EZ's. From above they look identical but the cut away cavity on the MX20 is supposed to assist long iron shots.
Be interesting to see if they get the accolade that Comp EZ's did.

I play with MX20's and I must say I am beginning love them. Ive had them for 3 months now..You know when you've hit a bad shot as the feedback is excellent.
I used to have air bear's before and the difference is unrecognisable. I have come down an extra club for distance 8iron = 150.
I went for the DGS300 shafts as the reg's were 2 flexy.
I tried TM320 irons, Titleist DC981's and could nt get on with any of them... The forging on the club head makes a heck of a difference...
One point ot note is that Im not hitting my 3 and 4 iron as well though...Im visiting the US soon so I will purchasing a 5W. TM 200 steel.

 Upgrade?? Interesting choice of words.
IMHO Clubs are not going to make up for a bad swing, but then I assume that the reason you want new clubs is to lower your handicap?
Only recommendation is get fitted by a pro, don't close you eyes to any clubs, you might end up buying something completely different (X14's and TA7's in the same price range??), and make sure you demo the club on a grass driving range. MX20's are great looking clubs though.

Common Sense at last. I have played with the MX20 for about a year and dropped five strokes on my handicap. These are excellent clubs which combine style and forgiveness. The steel shafted regular flex are superb for the mid hadicapper. One of the most pleasant suprises is the ease at which you can get the lon irons of the ground. I believe they are a better build than the EZ and Comp CT and give a more solid feel. The feel is vital and these are the most responsive clubs - it is just a shame they don't make a 1 or 2 Iron. I would also recommedn the Fairway Wedge (F) 52 Degree - all round superb clubs. And worth every penny.

The only concern I have is that over time the undercut cavity would rust, as it is hard to clean this area - Being forged mild steel they are prone to rusting, particularly in areas that are not chromed.
The chrome does wear off areas, particularly the sole of sand iron and wedges exposing bare metal.
Forged clubs, good as they are, take a lot more looking after and dent and scuff up quicker than cast stainless clubs.

Yes - You definately need a good set oa head covers and be willing to use them every round to protect them but the effort is worth it!

am looking to change clubs also, and have been doing a bit of looking around. the mx-20 does look like a nice club. I am going to try and demo them soon. Nice to read all your thoughts on them.

likewise - currently have 962's for the last 4-5 years and have been thinking in terms of tm 200, mx 20's and (favourite to date) x-14's - views on the other two would be greatly appreciated!

I switched from Titleist to the MX 20 2 months ago, and seen my handicap drop from 9.3 to 8.5, and then 8.5 to 7.7 in the 2 competitions I have payed in since. I get a slightly lower flight, greater forgiveness and a little more spin (maybe because of new grooves). I am also using a new 7.5 degree King Cobra driver that has added 20 yards to my drives. I thoroughly recommend these irons. (A mate has just bought the x-14s, but I dislike the fatter top edge as viewed at address.)

Fancy buying x-14's now when the x-16's are due for release shortly.
Quick way of losing a few bucks lads.
|
 |
hey alan, you got any set dates when the x-16's will be released?
|
 |
just had a gander at the website - jan 2003 they're set for release, in america anyway, as well as the new dfx putters - not sure about the appearance of the x-16's - should get a good deal on the x-14's when they come out!!

Sorry to revive this but who has used these clubs for a period of time and are they worth it? I tried them at the weekend and compared them to TaylorMade 320's, Cleveland TA7's, MP33's, Macgregor VIP musclebacks. I liked them a lot. Probably more than all the others I tried, although the MP33's and VIP's felt great as well and The clevelands felt excellant for a cast club.
Also has anyone had them custom fitted, how did they find the service? I don't think price is too much of an issue as I'm sure I could shop around for a bargain. But would have to sell my TA5's before I manage to get them.

 Dear Chris
I have used them for 18months and they are a superb club. I have also had TM 320 and Cleveland TA5 and these are far more forgiving and workable. I had them custom fitted and it took 4 days to get them back (I used a good golf pro). The long Irons are a dream to use and the wedges to offer a far more penetrating flight than most people are used to. It would also depend on your Handicap I think that 5-18 would be OK, lower than 5 go for the MP33, higher than 18, the others in the range CT etc. If you can get some demos to try first I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. The TM 320 are good but the MX20 are stylish to stand over which builds confidence. You will need a good set of headcovers because the forged head can get damaged easily being fairly soft - which of course gives the excellent feel that they offer. Finally Mizuno offer one of the best back up's and support to it's customers anywhere in the UK.

Cheers Roland, I did try the clubs at the weekend and wondered if the MX20's were worth more than £180 more than the 320's. I have since found them for 499 making them juat £100 more than the 320's. So given what you say and the fact I liked the feel of them in the nets at the shop I will probably be ordering myself a new set of MX20's. I think at that price I don't have to wait until I sell my TA5's.
