Cheap ones, maybe even a half set and you can leave the driver out for now. Don't buy new, don't worry about big names you have seen advertised, buy second hand, 5 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron and a pitching or sand wedge, a 3 wood, a putter and a bag.

Once you start playing and can hit the ball with some degree of consistency, then you could think about getting some more. The reason for waiting is you don't really know how you are going to play and what will suit you.

You will see some guys start by walking in to the pro shop and filling a bag with Callaways. Bad idea and expensive. They will look pretty cool missing the ball with their new X-18 5 iron.

irons - something with a large or "oversize" head and a cavity back. A quick trip to your local golf club and a chat with the pro is worthwhile - he'll explain things like cavity backs to you.

Personally I'd advise against getting a driver at this stage (but Cryptograph doesn't like me advising that) and maybe just get a 5-wood. Spend the most time choosing a putter, most pro-shops will let you try loads out on the practice green.

Good luck Scott and welcome to the game!

Scott, I was in Sports Soccer today, and noticed in their clearance sale they had a full set of Donnay clubs including bag, putter & woods for £26.99. At that price you can't go wrong. If your still growing, they had junior sets at £20.

These are both heavily reduced in price as Sports Soccer, or SOccer World, whatever its called is closing down & re-branding after a take over or something.

my sons 14 and has had no lessons. he plays off 12. his clubs are
Driver: Ping G2
3&5 woods: la jolla knifes
Irons: Miuzno mp-33's
Putter: Taylormade Mezza-monza

however, i would recommend the mitsushiba clubs avialable from JJB sports. They are £15 for woods and £10 for irons(individual). They are long lasting and great value.

good luck with your golfing career

Check out Skymax (http://www.skygolf.co.uk) - highly rated beginner clubs that'll still look good /stay sharp after a few rounds. Except for the 3 Progen wedges and the Rossa Daytona AGSI, all the other clubs in my bag are Skymax.

The Donnay Evolution II irons/wedges wear very quickly and the grooves will soon wear down, although the Challengers are not bad. The woods are ok, but check through all the clubs to see if the grips are on straight.
