I've got a sky blue Sky Sports 'Get your handicap down' shirt I was given in 1993 (made by Jerzees 539) - and ten years later despite having been washed probably 300 times, it's still as good as new - and more amazingly still fits!

A lot of my favourite golf clothes are old and well worn but comfortable. I much prefer wearing these than brand new kit - seem to play better in the old stuff.
Got to be honest though, some of the golf clothing churned out by the usual manufacturers is very 'samey' Looking at the Adidas stuff - Hmmm! not impressed - horizontal stripes for gawds sake, anyone more than a stone overweight will look like a barge.
It's about time that mens gear caught up with the styles that womens golf is enjoying, much greater variety and flair.
There are alternatives to the polo shirt and beige trousers.
Is there an innovative manufacturer out there or has GOLFcon got to design some stuff.

You're absolutely right Lionel, they don't make 'em like they used to. I used to think Rupert trousers - or any brightly coloured trousers for that mater, were 'cool'. And I once bought a Phil Mickelson-endorsed shirt at The Open that looked like it had had a can of paint thrown at it. These days it's all part of the dumbing down process - understated is trendy. I can relate to what you say about horizontal stripes. You've either got to be 6ft-6in tall or six stone soaking wet to get away with it, though some of my other golf pals tend to get dressed in the dark!

Used to admire Payne Stewart - now you HAD to be cool to wear that gear.

I can't say I've ever had a lucky golf shirt. I did have a lucky horse racing shirt. It was an awful orange plaid thing but I had one month when I never lost playing the ponies wearing that particular shirt, so natch, I kept putting the thing on. Didn't think I was superstitious but, well, it plays on your mind. Now I do know how I think a good golf shirt should feel - it has to be a little big and I don't like "hot" material, and I like to roll up the left sleeve like Tiger.

I've got a white Addidas polo shirt with the three blue stripes on the sleeves which I consider to be lucky. I shot my best competition round in it last year and also won the last 4 rounds of a knockout singles comp including the final in the same shirt (it had been washed after each round !!). This year has seen the luck rub off a bit but I shall be wearing it in a club foursomes final on Thursday afternoon !!!

I don't have a lucky shirt, I find all my shirts lucky. What I mean is that I play better without layers. I only prefer one layer on my top half. Even in winter I prefer this. I find even having the most flimsiest of jackets on restricts my swing (in my mind I think). It does get cold in winter but I now incorporate the taking my jacket of as part of my pre shot routine.

Taken from an article by Michael Patrick Shiels PGATOUR.COM Columnist
"Years of research by color psychologists seem to indicate that the characteristics of certain colors cause an emotional response in people. Psychologist Faber Birren studied modern American color associations and offered some color assertions in his book Color Psychology and Color Theory. According to Birren, the color red provokes mental associations with intensity, heat, blood, rage, and passionate fierceness. The Duncan Color Guide, a similar publication, states that the color red is known to escalate the body's metabolism. Black indeed invites thoughts of night and death and is considered ominous. It can also imply elegance and stands for the virtues of constancy, prudence and wisdom. Yellow is cheerful and inspiring, but can become irritating if unrelieved. Yellow has a direct association with caution, but at the same time could be good for the golf swing since it is thought of as a color that represents a playful, easy-going attitude about life.
White, literally speaking, is the absence of all color, white projects feelings of calmness, relaxation and an inner peace with one's surroundings. Since it reflects sunlight and heat, white is certainly the coolest color.
One can scarcely speak of golf without mentioning the color green. Its objective associations are quieting, refreshing and peaceful. It is a symbol of fertility, growth and harmony with nature. Of course The Masters Tournament's green jacket is one of golf's most coveted pieces of apparel. In marketing, green generally signifies the best and raises the price of goods.
Blue is the most calming color and the second-most powerful color after red. It is contemplative and sober, yet stands for loyalty, sincerity, and one's desire to nurture. Blue also projects tradition and authority.
Orange, it seems, may be the best color choice for the competitive player. Though rare in golf apparel and only the seventh most popular color among American consumers, orange is jovial, warm, energetic, forceful, and has a subjective impression of exuberance. It is associated with fruitfulness, adventure, vigor and wholesomeness, plenty of which exists in golf. "
Ther ya go Donk - that's why you can't play in red

Interesting article Alan - I'm also a bit superstitious over what I wear, especially when it gets a bit warm and you need to avoid that salty circle on the chest of a dark polo shirt. Usually prefer white but I have a new green one I'm anxious to break in. Used to have a green Augusta/Masters one I picked up in 1991 but always got accused of being a poseur - can't imagine why!

Burgundy and grey this season Bob - trust me.
