Hi,
Would like some advice from golfers far more experienced than myself please.
I have been playing for 6 mths off around 25.
At the moment I have a starter set of Wilson ProShaft irons, but would like to upgrade.
The local pro has guided me towards a set of G2 Ping's for £500, partly because of the custom fitting being 6'2" tall.
Are these going to be an investment, or should I consider another club for just now.
thanks.

If you have the money "DO IT"

The confidence from custom fit is worth it's weight in gold. These are great club too. Custom fit should be done by someone qualified, not the spotty kid in Nevada Bob's (or similar)

I had my first set of Pings done at the factory in Gainsborough.

(My only caveat is that after only playing for six months your set up might change)

I've been playing for about 5 months, and have a set of John Letters clubs. These were custom fitted for my height (6'1") only (and it was free).

I didn't feel I needed the full works in terms of custom fitting because my swing wasn't established at that point, so a custom fitting could well be out of date in a matter of months anyway.

I feel I'm going to stick with my Letters clubs until my swing is consistent and established.

Also, I'm pretty sure you could get your Wilsons custom-fitted... and Pings are not the only clubs you can buy that can be custom-fitted either.

Current issue of Golf World puts irons through robot and human testing. Ping G2s come out way ahead of everything else. £500 seems to be a bargain, too.

I tried a set off the shelf the other day and they were amazing.

I know single figure guys that use em as well.

You can get most clubs custom fitted now, for length and lie. There shouldn't be an extra charge of you're paying over £300 for a set of irons. At 6'2" I think custom fit is essential.

The Ping G2s are excellent, but I bought Letters T5s because they were £300 cheaper! I'm 6'2" and had mine adjusted +1/2" and 3 degrees upright. Try the Ping website to give you an idea of your fitting. (It's more to do with wrist to floor distance than height).

Make sure you try many other clubs before selecting which to buy. Demo demo demo. Just because the robots hit the Pings well doesn't mean that you will!

If you are thinking you need longer shafts or a few degrees upright because you are 6'2" then its really got nothing to do with your height, it's got everything to do with how long you arms are and the distance from hands/wrists to floor. My playing partner is 6'4" and plays standard sticks with ease because of his ape like long arms.

I am 6' 2" and half half inch longer 2 degrees upright.

We may change them to be less upright.

My custom fit is identical to Ant's... although I'm only 6'1". I must be more of an ape. ;)

I will get a 'proper' custom fit next time round... especially if I'm paying £500!!!

Thanks for the advice.
I had not considered that my swing may change, so it may be wise to hang on a few months yet.
Whilst checking reviews on the net I see good remarks for Taylormade RAC O/S irons and Cobra 3400i XH.
Can anyone guide me on these.
Thanks again

Places like DirectGolf stores have ranges for you to try clubs.

When the time comes to buy a new set, I'll be taking up that option I think. I get the impression clubs are a personal... what suits one, won't necessarily suit another.

hi mate - you sound in the identical situation to me 14 months ago.

im 6 2 and was guided towards the G2's by a pro i was having lessons with.

ended up paying 500 quid and going down to gainsborough to get fitted.

everyone is different, but i feel these clubs have ruined my game.

ive had one good round with them in 12 months.

i dont feel they are forgiving in any way and that there is a severe lack of feel from the clubs for 3 right through to SW.

If i could wind the clock back, I wouldnt even bother with online reviews. I'd go to a well stocked shop with a range and hit every club in my price range.

The one i hit best id then look for the best price on t'internet.

Hope that helps - don't be bullied into a club - custom fitting is fine, but keep your options open and try to hit as many irons as you can.

Try Wilson Deep Red. Really forgiving clubs and you can have these fitted too and much cheaper than Ping. Probably more playable too.

Appreciate all of the help...off to the range then.
Thanks

Try to get to a few demo days (although as its approaching end of season you will probably have missed most)or try proshops that have custom 'racks'(lots of the same club to different lie and length specs). Some of the top manufacturers supply them to the pros and they should have a ready made club to suit your build.

As Astronaut says the Ping website should give you you starting point for length and lie.

Geoggy...thats the best advice I've seen. I am sick and tired of being 'brand hyped'
Most iron sets when properly fitted will get the job done. I know when I have a lesson with my pro and swing my knackered old cheap graphites correctly, the game seems easy! Paying £500 for a set of clubs over a set for £250 will not mean £250 improvement. Trust your instincts...try clubs out and DON'T be swayed by the brand on the head.

As a rider to my last comment...buy clubs for £250 and spend £250 on lessons. I know which will improve your game more! Technique wins over equipment every time!
