If I had say four choices to idolise(funny word for what it represents) and I would love to have ten if time and the patience of GM members would allow, I would go for four who were/are GREAT golfers and total GENTLEMEN on and off the course:
BOBBY JONES, THE complete gentleman, a wonderful swinger of a golf club, in many knowledgeable watchers' eyes the greatest golfer who ever lived, bore a crippling disease(which killed him) for many years without a single complaint and was loved and respected throughout the world of golf.
ARNOLD PALMER, the most recognisable swing? in golf, a gentleman to rival Bobby Jones, a great and sporting winner -and loser-and the man who is generally regarded as making golf so popular throughout the world long before Nicklaus attained his stature and Tiger appeared on the scene.
TOM WATSON, IMO the sweetest, most natural quick-tempo swinger of a golf club ever with a smile and temperament to match, a 9 majors winner and idolised by fellow players and spectators everywhere he played- particularly in Scotland where he has also won the British Seniors Open.
HENRY COTTON, after Nick Faldo the greatest British golfer since Harry Vardon. Never a truly well man,he was the bulwark against the American invasion of our Open in 1948 having already won it in 1934 and 1937!! He was knighted for his services to golf and became a very famous golf teacher and consultant with a golf school in Vilamoura. His swing was dominated by the hands and became THE swing for many fine golfers for many years and is still copied today!
