Golf insurance
Is it worth it?

Nothing unusual in the specialist insurer claiming any pay outs from other insurance sources - you don't get paid out twice.

The hole in one insurance is definitely not the reason to buy golf insurance, although I was happy to have it when I got my hole in one last year.

The reason I have it is because I usually have my clubs in my car and I know that neither my car insurance or home contents insurance cover them when they're there. On top of that I take my clubs abroad two or three times a year and I know that my kit is fully covered.

Golf insurance is like any other insurance - we all hope we'lll never have to claim. However my clubs are vulnerable in my car and while I'm travelling and the chances of them being stolen, lost or damaged are high enough to make specialist golf insurance a must for me.

Is golf insurance worth it?  Like any insurance policy, its only worth it if you make a claim! If not, then its money down the pan.  You buy insurance to fix your downside if fate deals you a nasty blow

having said that, i would imagine the majority of readers here and indeed the public have an excess on their household insurance policy. This is because most people make the reasonable call that they'll bear a small loss, but its the big stuff they need cover for. And its usually considerably cheaper to accept a bigger excess, and you need to bear this in mind when considering the need for specific golf insurance.

Dan24, just a point of information. If the claims paid out on golf policies were only 20% of the premiums, you'd have insurers falling over themselves to provide it. and then the prices would go down. So the best advice is to shop around and check the terms and conditions of what you are buying to decide what level of cover and which insurer offers the best deal for you.

Interesting thread.

Hole in one cover - The words Bob Hope and No hope spring to mind and yes you'd undertsand if you saw me play. However I'd only to happy to pay out a bar bill of £180 if I sank one - of course with winning £200 off my mates through a cheeky outright winner bet.

There was one time that I was at Brandon Golf course (Coventry) and the buggers had loaded the course up way past capacity for decent human being play as it was the first hottest day of the year with as many players as they could muster.  The wait to tee off on any hole was bordering 30 mins (3-4 groups at each hole). Around the 12th hole and absolutley peeved to the high hilt, I took matters into my own hands (4 ball ahead on buggies and playing like they had the course to themselves..PAINFULLY)  Well my  Pal Bingo suggested that I tee off to hurry them up.. What happnens, I only hit a drive Tiger woods would have swirled his club at and launched a monster.  The ball seemed to be heading for the eldest of the 4 ball ahead and everything went into slow motion.  The word "FORE" fell out my mouth like one of the fook ups you see on X-factor in the first 2 weeks, my legs turned to jelly and I held my breath... Luckily for me it missed him by what can be described as a 'nats cock'. Probably would have maimed him in a big way!had i not took the wind into account

We left after that hole lets say (along with other cheesed off players at Brandon)

Lesson of the day - dont try stuff like that without insurance.

Either I m an idiot or at least some of us fellow golfers have been faced with the same prospect in their 'golfing' career. Stories please..

I would say that by the amount of leaflets that come out of golf magazines etc., the insurers are pretty much falling over themselves to provide it. I would suspect that more is spent by them on advertising and administration than on payouts.

mose Mosley,

Yes you're an idiot for directly aiming at another golfer.

End of.

You've got to remember that for every 10 honest golfers they insure there is probably one scratter who thinks insurance is the best thing since sliced bread ("pay £50 premium and make a claim for £500 - is better than lottery!")

Fengibbon.

Wasnt aiming at another golfer.

Was aiming down the fairway and as I said hit a monster - more than Id accounted for.

If you havent done anything like that 'ever' then your a better bloke than me

Mose,

What happnens, I only hit a drive Tiger woods would have swirled his club at and launched a monster.  The ball seemed to be heading for the eldest of the 4 ball ahead and everything went into slow motion.  The word "FORE" fell out my mouth like one of the fook ups you see on X-factor in the first 2 weeks, my legs turned to jelly and I held my breath... From this description I read that the ball was travelling at pace, airborne and went past him - ie not an ankletapper - yes we've all driven through another group when the ball bimbles along the ground.

From experience to an average golfer, and sorry if I am calling you an average golfer (ie 5-25 handicap) a monster Tiger wind assisted drive ain't an awful lot further than an average to good drive - you don't suddenly get an extra 50 yds......

As for golff insurance - yes I have it, mainly because the small print in car / home / travel cover does not give me the protection I require for my golfing equipment.

Fair point Paul.

I was fogetting that not all golfers are as honest and upstanding as those on this forum.

It does'nt make it any better value for the honest golfer though, but I suppose the true benifit to the golfer is in the 'peace of mind', regardless of to what degree it's actually fit for purpose.

Re: Mose Mosley's post: I don't believe golf insurance would have covered him (or more to the point anyone injured by him) anyway, as his actions would quite rightly be consider wreckless.

You should shop around, both my policies cover golf clubs at no extra cost. The only time I have to pay a small premium is when I take clubs abroad.

I've got a company car so there's no choice on the insurer. My good lady spends hours on the internet shopping around for the best deal on home insurance - I'm pretty sure we're getting a good deal on that and the golf insurance.
