is it allowed ? Obviously, you can't 'ground' your club but is it against the rules to take your stance and do a couple of practice swings above the ball ?

No, swing away as long as you don't ground your club.

No problem.

Rules of Golf Definitions:

Stroke

A “stroke’’ is the forward movement of the club made with the

intention of striking at and moving the ball.

@penfold -

Did somebody hit you with a penalty for doing this?

doc,

no mate. This was brought up in a discussion on tuesday when i was playing in a texas scramble. One of our team (a lad off 3) asked if i knew it was against the rules for a player to make a practice swing in the bunker ? He'd had a debate about this on his own course where the other guy had bizaarrely claimed it was against the rules for amateurs but not pros.
