I have a baseball grip (left hand under right) and am right handed. I do ok playing off about 20. I read golf magazines and pick up the tips inside ok and can use most of them. I have trouble when it comes to advice on grip as mine is the reverse to the usual. I'm also due to join a club and get 3 golf lessons chucked in which is quite daunting. It's too late for me to try and change to the normal grip as I've been playing for 10 years with my own style. Any other baseball grippers out there?

I played recently in Wales with a guy who also used that exact grip. Looked strange to me but seemed pretty efficent. He was an social golfer and played to about 15. I was also wondering what a Pro would say in a lesson to that grip. Would be interested to hear.

Not only baseball but cack-handed as well!
There was a thread on this very topic (search for "cack handed" and you should spot it) on this site some weeks ago.
If you're happy with your game and level of play then don't let the pro mess about with your familiar grip. Set-up, posture, alignment - sure, but switching to a new grip can really knacker your game.
If you're a keen golfer (i.e. have been playing regularly over the 10 year period and it's not been in fits and starts i.e. one year playing a couple off, etc.) and you have not improved greatly then maybe a grip change could be for you.
Just out of interest: Sky TV's EuroGolf pundit Ronan Rafferty (who was also a former Ryder Cup player and Volvo Order of Merit champion) uses the regular baseball style grip.

 Hi John.
I am a great fan of the baseball grip. When I started to play golf (about 5 years ago)I was taught the interlocking grip which seemed ok. Now and again I would start slicing and it took awile to get it back again. Last August while I was in a slicing slump there was this old timer who suggested I try the 10 fingered grip (baseball) which I did and I have never looked to change back. I do loose a bit of length on the drive but I would rather have the ball on the fairway or on the green than spending time in the woods.

Thanks for the comments people. I'll see what the pro at my new club says and let you know.

I play off 9.5 cackhanded basball grip if its going ok and you dont want to get on the ryder cup team leave it alone

play with a cackhanded baseball grip with a h/cap of 4. my motto -- play the way it feels right and don't worry about how it looks to others

I use a baseball grip and had my 1st lesson this week. Soon as the pro said lets take a look at your grip I mumbled in shame that I use a baseball grip, he said it doesnt matter, if its comfortable and works then carry on, he only wanted to just check the positioning.

Mezza, unless it's against forum rules, you might want to name your Pro and where to find him. Sounds like the sort of chap that might be useful to know for more than a few of us hackers! How did the rest of your lesson go?

Search out any area that has a history of shinty and you will find lots of cack-handed golfers and they are usually very handy (pun excused please). Years ago there used to be a guy that had two club handicaps - one left-handed and a different one when playing right-handed. He had to announce which hand he was playing before teeing off.

tried this the other day felt wierd as hell but tbh it was no worse than the overlapping grip
|
 |
I can't do the overlapping grip, I've only got small hands so I can't do it all, feels like the club is wafting all over the place. Play off 14 with a normal right-handed baseball grip.

I played against a bloke this season who chipped one-handed (from around the green) off a handicap of 6 or 7. It worked for him and he had his own reasons for doing it - it just felt more comfotable for him.

Die Rees, a professional golfer playing in the fifties used a baseball grip to great affect.Believe he finished second in the Open one year.

I think most people are better off with the interlocking grip etc because the hands work better together that is what i told my friend on the range who was using the baseball grip and after switching his shot were a fair bit better .

Seriously mate, I'd swallow your pride and start again. I've seen lads on the range with these grips and it just doesn't do them any good whatsoever. You're never going to succeed/challenge better players with a grip like that. I'm not meaning to be horrible in any way, but if the grip worked you'd be much lower than 20 in ten years. Sorry, I really don't mean to sound horrible at ALL! I just think you need to change it mate
