In general i am quite happy with my iron play, at least from 6 to pitching wedge. The area I really struggle is my long irons 3 to 5 where I cant hit them for love nor money. When i attempt to hit these irons they always end up going extreme right and seeing the course I play tends to get very windy you sometimes have to shoot two clubs more to achieve the distance required. As a golfer on a shoestring after paying club fees i hoping you guys can give some helpful and needed advice.

Buy a rescue club.

Gee thanks, seriously though I have tried that to no avail. Have got a rescue club admit its only a howson with a graphite shaft and unfortunately I am at present unable to upgrade so need to work with what i have.

I have always subscribed to the verve that all clubs are hit with the same swing, action etc, so there are a few things you should try Morgs (1) the mind game - think everything below a six is a six and hit it properly (2) if you play on a windy course use your handicap that's whats its for (3) forget rescue clubs - use the clubs you have and use them properly (4) think about the rhythm of the best club you have and utilise that with all of your clubs (5) when playing in the wind ((against)) play the ball back a little in your stance and play a strike ((with)) play less club and hit the full shot.......Finally if your shots are going to the extreme right think about it, the club face is open when you hit the ball - stop taking a full swing take a three quarters swing and concentrate on hitting the ball properly - If all of that fails do what Paul L 15 and seventeen million other rescue numpties are doing - good luck

Can only agree with John Tonner point 1. Forget what club you have and swing. Make sure you keep accelerating through impact.

Gosh JT!  Now I know what I've been doing wrong all these years!

And so much for that silly myth that long irons are harder to hit.  Oh I do feel such a fool

Not sure that its a silly myth, however fixing the problem with your long irons will probably be beneficial for your all round game... Why paper over the cracks (Hybrid), better off fix the problem!!

the points like like, are 3/4 swing acclerate through the ball, good tempo, club face has to be square at impact, as they are longer the more open the worse it will be. and id like to add a smooth takeaway.

its totaly a mental thing the diffrence in loft isnt tht big from say a 6 to a 4 iron, try hitting the 6 iron then straight after do the same swing on a 4, and maybe try gripping down a few inches might help.

the only time ive had problems really hitting a long iron was a old TP-18 mizuno 3 iron, the heads about the same size as my putter.
