Where did you try them? Thought the XR range was Japanese only, although I'm sure they can be imported in.
I think they are based on the Y-cutter grooves? TMs latest Z-wedges use the slightly bigger (+10% volume) Z-grooves, which are claimed to generate slightly more spin and feel a bit softer than previous TM wedges. Certainly noticed even range balls stopping quite well with the Z-grooves. An advantage these XR wedges might have is in terms of feel, being forged and all.
The japanese market is renowned for forged clubs, probably as some of the best forging factories are in that part of the world. For example, Endo forging are highly regarded and rumoured that several big OEMs use them to make tour-only forged clubs for their Pros. But you can get Endo forged clubs under their own brand, Epon. Even Scratch Golf in the US who use one of the softest feeling carbon steels, get their clubheads forged in Japan. Japanese forged wedges also seem to generate a lot of spin, some claimed to rival that of the Callaway MD grooves.
I have had a TP satin wedge with the Y grooves for some time now in 52deg and can honestly say it is the most reliable club in the bag. Love the feel from it, fantastic from 120yards in and does put a great zip on the ball. Haven't tried out the Z grooves, but if anything like the Y will be fantastic.
They are fantastic, i used them today and the spin i generated was absoloutly fantastic. I used to get little to no spin but these things get more spin than my old wedges and more that i got with my mates Vokey.
