Amateurs won't get into the Olympics. It's all about TV rights, and who, with the greatest respect, would pay to watch a field full of Gary Wolstenholmes?
Sorry but that doesn't quite ring true. I found myself watching GB's lady archers on Sunday morning - can't say I had a clue who any of them were but that was irrelevant. Ditto for the vast majority of rowers, cyclists, swimmers, fencers, wrestlers etc. etc.
Maybe people would still watch - though with the golf you'd know these weren't the best in the world, whereas with minority sports, you take it on trust that they are - but the main point is that TV companies wouldn't pay so much to show them. After all, look at how ratings fall when one top player's missing: what if they all were?
I agree the Olympics should be all about amateurs. No decent Pros will appear and Mickelson and Tiger will be long past it by 2016 anyway. It would be of interest if the likes of Walker Cup players could compete for National honour.
