Backswing and tempo

I often hear people say that you don't hit the golf ball on the backswing so keep it slow.  I do consciously try to keep my backswing slow but find that this can impact on tempo. I feel that if I slow my backswing down too much I tend to snatch on the downswing resulting in a poor shot.

Should I forget about the speed of the backswing (or swing) and focus on maintaining good tempo, irrespective of the speed?

Comments are appreciated, thanks.

23rd,

tell me more about this TourTempo.

Have you tried this ?

I am always suspicious of "Golf Secrets", but tempo is one of those almost magic things that is difficult to explain or understand.

Pengy, Hayes over on Chucks forum swears by it. I've never used it myself, but would consider it. If you look into tour players tempo it's virtually always 3:1 whereas us hackers kinda make up all sorts of tempos of our own!

I find Strawberry Moose a lot cheaper.

Thanks for this 23rd... I'd never heard of this but very interesting.

Also looked at following link:TourTempo

The pros make it look so simple but I suppose the trick (as everything in golf) is consistency!

You know what ? Thinking about it this ties in with the 3/4 swing thread.

I have been working on a 3/4 swing for a while which has been discussed on that thread but the 3/4 swing is also a good tempo swing.

Maybe the 2 tie in .

I like the look of this training aid though.

Santa always get stuck when getting me presents - maybe this could be added to the list.

Lucky,

Tempo is your tempo, no-one else's.

If it feels too quick it probably is, if it feels too slow it probably is.

Its all about it fitting into your swing in a natural movement that won't detract/ disrupt the swing as a whole.

Be careful not to associate a change to your tempo to fix what might be a swing fault.

One key difference between regular golfers and tour players is that many regular golfers are completely unaware of finding that milli-second between the end of their backswing and the start of their downswing. Everything significant is kicked into action  from that very moment. It takes practice to become aware of it, and until you are aware of it then outstanding play is close to being impossible to achieve.

My Back swing is slow, but controlled, must say my follow through was weak, but was first swing of the day

No fat Jokes please

Nice slice there Jahmoo.

Controlled is one way of describing it. I thought you had recorded it on slow motion .

But seriously, is this SLLLOOOOOWWWWWWW backswing deliberate or is it just your natural tempo ?

It looks a little un-natural to me.

I have worked on my 3/4 swing which also seems to tie in with a more controlled tempo, this has helped me really improve on my ball striking. There is definately something to this tempo lark. I'm just not sure something that slow will lead to a fast swing speed and you need the speed to get the distance.

Yes Pengwyn...  a lot to be said about this tempo lark.

You might have already seen following link... this is unreal.

Kj Choi and Tiger

Nice tempo!

I reckon in hundreds of different people I've taught, I've told maybe 5 extreme cases to slow down their backswing.   I really can't see the point of it being slow for the sake of it, for me personally a slow backswing seems to take forever, then I just yank it from the top!

Now if someone is jerking the club back with their hands and they need to start the b/s more with their shoulders and chest, and this results in what looks like a slower, smoother b/s then fair enough - that is slower as a result of swinging better, not just slower for the sake of it.

I generally find that a smooth transition from back to downswing is key, i.e. finish the backswing before starting forward.

Hi,

My internet connection here is pretty poor, I can't download any kind of streaming or any links such as the above and others the guys post.

Can you give me a run-down on the tourtempo?

Thanks.

Not a huge slice, just of the fairway, but as mentioned, quite weak, not that long, I would call it first Tee jitters

I hit every shot, apart from the putting with that tempo, the only thing that gets quicker is the down swing, as would have warmed up by then. I am happy with this swing and 95% of the results on any given day.

Bob,

Basically it proves that most Pro's have the same Tempo Ratio of 3/1 downswing. ie the time it takes to start and complete the backswing is 3 times longer than it takes to start the downswing and hit the ball. They have studied modern pro's and historical pro's and the 3/1 ratio is consistent. The important point is to understand this is a ratio. The pro's take different amount of time to complete the swing but the ratio of backswing to downswing is consistently 3/1.

It obviously goes on to promote it's products to help you develop a 3/1 tempo.

I am going to buy the book and cd to look into it further.

thats a strange thign bob, about starign the down swing after the back swing finishs.

ive seen countless pros start the down swing before the backswing finshes. obviously they start it from the ground not the club or that would be impossibe.

ive always thoguth ito a bit liek a whip you woudlnt whip it back stop then whip it forward?

A simpler approach, stolen from Tommy Armour's 1961 book "How to play your best golf all the time" is to count 1,2 wait as you start the backswing wth the "wait" coming before you start the downswing. Works for me...
