I doubt there are many options on that criteria - why not consider a hotel near good courses? Although, Woodhall Spa might only be a couple of hours away and they do deals with the hotels almost next to the course - and if you haven't played there it is an amazing course - definitely in my top 5 of all time and the deals are great value compared to similar standard courses. Another option - and not played there - is East Sussex National

You could also make it to Berkshire /Surrey/ Hants area around Bracknell area and there are loads of top courses within 10-20 miles depending on budget etc.

Have been to both Wensum Valley and Greetham Valley with similar sized groups. Prefered Wensum, better course and a bit more life in the bar in an evening, and are going back in September.

A bit closer to home you have Five Lakes but I thought that was expensive and not as good as I was expecting and Stoke By Nayland which I have not played but understand the courses are very good but I do not know what they are like in an evening.

There is also one near Gatwick, Cottesmore or something like that, but I have no idea what that is like.

If you're looking for a place with some good courses, but aren't worried about the hotel being on site, then have a look at Peterborough. There are two muni courses there (Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows) which are both very good courses. In addition there are a few other courses around there as well (Elton Furze, Thorney, Stilton and a couple of others) which are pretty good too!

Just thought I'd chuck that one in there

PN - Wokingham is on the money with East Sussex National. I can't think of a better 36 hole with hotel within the drive.

PN, you must play there some time. In fact, I'd be happy to make up a fourball during the autumn, as you can get great deals for 36 holes plus lunch frmo October. Interested, then PM me.

We have 2 courses at West Malling, giving you your 36 holes. Whilst we don't have a hotel on site, there are some just down the road as well as at Brands Hatch which is about 10 minutes up the road.

Forest of Dean in Coleford, Gloucestershire, 36 holes and a good hotel called the Bell hotel.

My Golf Society are going there next week for 3 nights and 6 rounds! Unfortunately I haven't got any holidays left so am unable to attend this year! But had a Blast last year!

I Understand that going to a hotel with a 36 hole course, but I think it would be better to head for a golfing break in Britains capital of Golf (Southport).  Yes I live there so I would say that, but why?

From Lord street in southport you have 9 18hole courses within a 10 mile radius. Here are the courses, I have played everyone and can give some account of them.

Muncipal Southport Links:  For a muni this is one of the best in the country and costs £13.50 on weekends or £11.00 on weekdays. It is always busy and queues are a regular site. Wednesdays and Fridays are best times to go as there are less players.

Royal Birkdale: I don't think I need to tell you about this course. I'm sure most of you know it. However did you know it is only £25 to go round with a member.

Hesketh Golf Club: The next step up after the Muni and a decent course.

Formby Hall: Probably the most scenic golf course in England, not too hard to play but a nice experience. It has just added a 9 hole par 3 course that was opened by Jack Nickalas(due to the fact RBS own the course). Also thew first home in Britain to an amatuer academy with a huge Hotel

Formby: A great course with many challenges. A course that I love to play and if you have a decent handicap you will love it too.

Formby Ladies: Don't get put off by the name, it is a short course but a great one to play no matter the gender.

Hillside: Many in Southport believe this to be better then Birkdale, but it can not hold big tournaments due to it's lack of ability to hold crowds. However it is a fantastic course.

S&A (Southport and Ainsdale) A great course that comes 3rd to Birkdale and Hillside in playing but has the best members and a great atmosphere.

Southport Old links: Your callsic run of the mill course.

So if you want to face a great place for Golf you cannot beat Southport. Show me anywhere that can offer such a great array of courses.

I would have to disagree and say that S&A comes second to Hillside, Birkdale being 3rd in the Southport area. Also Formby Hall as the most scenic course in England - are you sure? BTW the par 3 is not open yet and the hotel only has 36 rooms!

Agree with your analysis of Southport being a golfing Mecca though. The Golf Coast!

Another to throw in for thoughts Celtic Manor - pobably only a couple of hours from Essex and three good courses with a 5 star hotel to boot!

Also in the southport area you could throw in West Lancs as another Links course!

Hi Golf Manager

Agree that Southport is a golf capital of England but I reckon that Wokingham-Farnham-Weybridge triangle has even more top courses:

It might be a slightly larger area (marginal) but still compact and has: Hankley Common , North Hants, Bearwood Lakes, Sunningdale (2), Wentworth (3), Swinley Forrest, The Bekshire (2), Worplesdon, West Hill, Woking, New Zealand, St George's Hill, Foxhills (2), Burhill (2), and The Wisley and Queenwood (need a member for these two). And these are only the real top courses - there are lots of other quality tracks such as Mill Ride, Guilford, Farnham Sands, East Berkshire etc

Another 5-10 miles on the search area opens up couses like Hindhead, Blackmoor and Liphook, Walton Heath (2), Royal Wimbledon, Coombe Hill, West Surrey etc.
