great advice about how you think about the club.

my biggest gain in distance and accuracy came from trying to just pop the ball 200yds straight. I backed off the power and increased it bit by bit and was shocked to find with my feet planted (heels down not on the balls) and with a s-l-o-w- swing I was creaming the ball up to 300yds!

I put this down to not using my arms anymore but my body. And while the length of swing is shorter ( again...) The results are making me one of the happiest golfers around here.

so think positional and don't clout it would be my two nuggets.

300 yards, and you didn't use your arms - that is impressive.

Although I shudder to think what you did use instead.

Well, niblick

Being black I'm used to having extra length.

i started back playing golf last year after a 15 year break, previously off 8 handicap, now 10. I have tried the 460 drivers but really struggled with them. I purchased a Ping i3 driver which has a smaller head and to be honest had have excellent success with it, when i hit it in the right direction i can get over 300+. I hit the ball a long way but not always in the direction i need. I also play my golf on a links course. A driver is essential when the wind blows and in the winter months, but with the ground rock solid i have had to learn to think my way around the course

I purchased a taylormade burner rescue about a month back and i have to say that it is fantastic, i only use my driver in the wind now. By varying the tee hieght i have found the rescue very successful hitting it on average about 220-240yards. I took out and tested a titeliest d2 driver  on monday and i have to say what a club that was, at £200+ you would expect quality, but in all honesty it did the same job as my i3!. You do need a driver but all to often i see higher hcap players spraying it all over the shop when with the shots they recieve they would be better of trying to get to the green in three not two shots

ever tryed to hit an easy half swing with a driver ? you would be surprised how far it goes 200-220yards ie 5 iron distance and relatively easy to pull off and hit straight compared to belting a 5 iron the same distance.

Do you eat spinach for breakfast?

ok 220 for a 5iron isn't on but i can roll a 5iron up to the 200 marker , just trying to make point that i find it much easier to hit a driver these distances than irons.

Why would anyone want to roll irons? I want the things to stop dead, they are target clubs not distance clubs.

And do you succeed at stopping a five iron dead?

Another classic 300 thread

I've never hit a 300 yard drive. I got close once with a 3 wood on a very hot day, but about 80 yards of it was the ball running down a slope.

Naturally I duffed the chip onto the green so I'd have been better off hitting a 200 yard drive and hitting in with a 9 iron anyway!

I guess I forgot to mention course conditions have a lot to do with my decision as our rough as discussed on previous threads is long and its impossible to find a slightly off target ball My course is pretty tight in places the fairway seems to have shrunk in the wash and the grass is high and thick.

I would also like to point out that if tiger woods did not have the Luxury of ball spoters and 15,000 spectators looking for his pushed or pulled drives would he be so careless with the driver? In actual fact would he be the best golfer in the world?? With my 16 degree rescue when caught sweet this thing travels but does seem more accurate than my driver. I would also like to say I really do miss my driver and for the past 4 months have been fine and working well as a team Maybe its just my swing at the moment but for me its working out fine with my 3 Iron and 16 degree rescue and the driver cant share a bit of time with my spare wheel until the course and hopefully my swing come back!!

who said i wanted too , i'd be lying if i said i could carry a 5iron 200 , 200 is the distance i get carry and roll i never quoted how much carry how much roll , i you can carry a 5iron 200yards to stop dead they go join the seniors tour, why are you SO confrontational Creo ?

its also got to depend on the lenght of the course, for example my course is just a tad over 6000 yards, with most of the par 4 holes under 400yds. With the hard ground conditions a five iron to 200-210 yards leaves a respectable shot into the green with a mid iron.

With a longer course ie over 7000 yards this is not going to be possible, i hate to use the term but it is course management and what your comfortable with. I would prefer to loose distance with my driver so long as my accuracy improved.
