Walker,

where you have the skill to lay up. I might shoot two shots. But if say on a par five I have 300yds after the drive then I'll hit gentle 5i and then instead of going for ON I'll aim for the wide area infront of the green with an 8i for example which if I over hit MIGHT just go on. but if not I can chip a nice shot onto a useful part of the green instead of hoping its not too far. I've found its better for me to be able to hit a good shot onto the green than put from miles away. JUst me though. I know we are all different.

Cheers,

 S.

300 yards to the pin? - makes an easy par 4 .... 200 yard 19 degree rescue (or 5 wood) & PW down the throat - one putt for birdie

580 yard par 5??

Drive 330

3 iron 250

4 putts for a 6 and 3 points cos I got two shots playing off 24!

EASY! Now, where can I learn how to play tennis?

I only play gross scores. the rest is academic to me. I just want more circles and triangles on my score cards. Nothing more, nothing less.

Two weekends ago I shot my lowest score ever, 76, usual score low 80's mainly because of 1 or 2 bad holes. These two holes are not necessarily down to going for it with a 3 wood before anyone mentions it.

This is my fairway wood shots on this round, 1st two Par 4's are 3w's for me as driver will put me in trees/shrubs, both are doglegs. 1st Par3, 191yds, strong wind slightly across/into face, easy 3w landed and stopped on green. Next Par 3, 207yds directly into strong wind, 3w hit bunker just short of green, slightly more left and it would have rolled onto green. Par 5 - 479yds,slight uphill to start, long drive with the strong wind(261yds - measured with Motocaddy S3), 218yds left to go, uphill and two very large trees between me and the green. 5w clears the trees and lands just short of green and rolls up 10 feet from hole (eagle putt missed but birdie didn't).

In 4 years of playing this course I have only ever reached the Par5 green in two less than 5 times. However, I took the 5w on this occassion as it was reachable and I was in the zone after 14 holes of near level par. Under normal circumstances, I would lay up 100yds short of green and pitch on for a birdie putt or hopefully at worse a par putt. But, as you can see, the fairway wood does have it's place in the bag, for me and the course that I play.

For me 3 wood off the T has merits over a Driver in terms of ability to shape the shot... and degree of error. My fault is to come slightly across the ball resulting late fade right... With a Driver that means in the trees. With 3 Wood that often means edge of fairway.. Also trying to hit draw which I can do with the 3 wood means worst case straight!

My home course I use 3wood on 6 tees of the 18 holes, of which 6 of the remainder are par 3's. I could use driver for many of them, as do most of the people I play with, however I find especially on some of the shorter par 4's on my course, you can run into more trouble or be too close to the green if you get a good drive away. I also play many links courses where I feel 3wood for me is the better shot off the tee rather than risk a wilder drive or higher flighted utility club. Personally, I would never drop it from the bag.

I love waiting back on the fairway for folk to putt out for 11s and 12s!

If you want to find *really* how far you 'usually' hit your driver or any other club for that matter, get google earth, find your course and use the ruler. Its easy to find out your yardages by clicking the ruler on the tee boxer and dragging it to where you usually end up. I find i get about 230yards with driver but measured a hole where i've drove the green a few times and its about 270 to the green which i'm more than happy with.

That's a great idea! What I'm really happy about is it has confirmed that I do hit the distances I though I did! I wonder how accurate it is?
