I get the feeling that you'd be confrontational if I lived in the same town... then it'd be area... then street... then even numbered houses.

You called!

I dunno, if I were to limit myself to 7 clubs it would probably be the odd numbered Irons, 3 5 7 9, putter, 3 wood and 19 degree rescue.

As someone who does use only a limited number of clubs I find I use them all, a lot! I'm at the stage where I even play tournaments etc with 7 or 8 clubs. Ive sorta taught myself to hit different shots with the same clubs rather than using more clubs and fewer shots.

Generally its Driver, 4I, 6I, 8I, PW, couple of wedges and a putter, though sometimes I use the 5 7 9 irons instead and just have the 7 clubs total.

I think it's a good idea. I know John Jacobs recommended chipping and pitching with anything from a 5 iron upwards, and manipulating the club to play any type of shot (teaching the effects of angle of attack, opening and closing the face, and shaft angle).

Learning to use my 8i around the green made my recently aquired chipper redundant!

That can only be a good thing!

Interesting question. I suppose the best way is to guesstimate what a typical (for me) round of 100 shots at my home course would be made up of:

  • Putter - 38 (yes, rubbish I know, but a couple of those would be from off the green!)
  • Driver - 12 (tee shots)
  • Gap wedge - 10 (2 full, 8 short pitches/chips)
  • Penalty shots - 7 (OOB 2, Lost 4, drop 1)
  • 23* hybrid - 6 (2 tee shots, 4 full seconds)
  • 54* Sand Wedge - 5 (2 from sand, 3 from rough)
  • 7-wood - 4 (1 tee shot, 3 full seconds)
  • 8-iron - 4 (2 full, 2 chips)
  • 25* hybrid - 3 (3 full seconds)
  • 9-iron - 3 (2 full, 1 chip)
  • 7-iron - 2 (1 tee shot, 1 full)
  • 4-wood - 2 (tee shots)
  • Pitching Wedge - 2 (2 full)
  • 6-iron - 1 (full)
  • 58* Lob Wedge - 1 (pitch from well below green or from sand under the face)

My half set is: Driver, 23* H, 7I, 9I, GW, 56* SW, Putter
