not really   im actually trying to highlight the bullshit out there

all elite sports people benefit from technology more than the average guy -its allways been this way and wont change

the problem arises when the industry uses technology to sell and people believe it

you are right also when you highlight different wind conditions , altitude etc  -they all have a bearing

the advice is to question everything

forgot to add   as a 9 handicapper you have to have some repeatability in what you do as 80% plus of all golfers never reach single figures

As exmax says, there is repeatability in your swing regardless of what you think. You don't get to single figures by luck on each swing.

I agree that once you have a reasonable handicap, there is a degree of repeatability in your swing.  I know that I don't hit too many bad shots, but I don't have the time available to practice as much as I would want to so lose out on certain aspects of the short game and lapses in concentration etc.  My clubs were fitted for me by a Pro who I trust and who knows me and my game, so I am pretty certain that I have the best tools for my game.

Cheers guys as I said I DO actually believe that custom fitting will help all golfers maybe not as much as lessons with a pro though.

I think that what it would achieve for me is knowing 100% that it was my fault and not the clubs so physcologically (??) that may actually improve my game.

As far as repeating my swing take on board what you say but was off 6 a few years ago but put it down to age now

There are so many myths out there regarding custom fitting its become almost a dirty word. The club manufacturers spin this out. After all, why encourage custom fitting so the player buys a set and keeps it for years? Why not just spin out a load of guff and get every player trying out the latest gear each season? Lie angles, angle of attack, release point, speed of transition, feel ie the players sensitivity to bend point, physical strength, it all makes sense, none of that is rocket science. Tom Wishon does indeed understand all that, but anyone with even a basic grasp of swing mechanics can relate to it. But instead you hear in the club house about the 24 handicapper who has decided he needs a 2 torque shaft at 300 quid a pop, because his 2.5 is a bit whippy, because the rep who knows a tour player has told him so. And all that on top of manufacturing tolerances so bad a top brand give pros clubs 2 degrees out in some cases, and another sold a set from a 'tour' van when tested had 4 different frequency profiles across the irons, from lady to xx. Old tales but well worth telling. So many players duff away with poorly matched clubs that are not what they say they are and which are ill-suited for anything other than hoping for blind luck they will fit.

Just to confuse you all and prove that every swing is different. I am 5'4" and 1/2" shorter as expected BUT 1deg upright.

Hi John,

1 degree upright in what exactly, i.e.which make and model of club?   Was that from a proper fitting?

Good example of how we are all different.

The clubs were Mizuno MX900's and fitted at the Mizuno fitting centre at Cumbernauld. The lie was 1deg upright from standard.

Hi John,

I thought they would be Mizuno, I suppose that's easy to say now so I should have said so before!!

The reason I say that is I didn't think you would be 1 degree upright in other brands such as Titleist, Taylor Made, due to Mizuno's own standard being a lot flatter.

Example from websites:

     Mizuno MX950 6 iron, length 37.25", lie angle 61*

     Titleist AP1 6 iron, length 37.5, lie angle 62.5*

T Made R7 CGB Max 6 iron, lie angle 62.5.

So you can see that in a Titleist AP1 you would come out at 1/2 degree flat and 3/4 inch shorter.

Just thought I'd be a trainspotter for a bit!!

Bob and the other clever fitters can I ask the following

I purchased a set of Mizuno mp30 2nd hand about 6 months ago with DG s300 shafts NOT custom fitted.

Now considering what has been written above re Mizuno can I ask your opinion on the following

1) For a good tempo swing with speed of around 85-90mph is this shaft OK. A static fitter suggested when I hit 1 ball on swing monitor that due to my swing speed regular or rifle 5.0 shafts were prob more suitable ?

2) If the lie of the club is too flat at impact could this lead to hitting more thinned shots ? This seems to be a constant thing in my game since I changed

3) Could the above contribute to shanking which I have seemed to have to fight against since I got the clube and which I never did with my old set. They were Swilken Alta iron with Ithink a regular shaft and only changed them as I thought the Mizunos would give me a greater edge but they do not seem too hence my planned purchase of custom fitted set. The fact the Mizuno are semi bladed is not an issue as I have always tended to have this type of club as I hate to see a lump of metal at the end of a shaft so its not a confidence thing.

Thanks

1   speed in itself  shouldnt be relied upon to fit  - the force you generate  to bend the shaft is more applicable

2  no  - if you dont overpower the stiff shaft  the droop into impact wont be as pronounced -  so if you imagine your hands down to the clubhead and ball , the shaft wont have much deflection   in an upward bow

do the same thing but with a shaft you overpower and the deflection will be more , the head will be lower and will come back closer  to your hand s /feet   up to 1/2 ins  as the bow is more pronounced

this answers 3 also  - so shaft  more so than lie

its also the reason why lie boards shouldnt be depended on   as it effects all of the above

thinning will never ever be the fault of shaft deflection and shanking will always be a technique issue, never equipment, and Ex is spot on, swing speed has got little to do with what flex you end up with
Show/hide user stats

yes swingpath and height changes will cause the same problems in a biomech / technique point of view

i have seen  and  ive done many many tests using guys at all levels of technique and the way the shaft bends will have a major effect on where the ball then strikes the face in both horizontal and linear planes , and by consequence where the clubhead then returns at impact to the ball

As ever then boys dont blame the tools  DAMN I need a lesson

but it still won't deflect enough to cause a thin unless you take a strong golfer and give them a lady flex

i agree   i said the opposite ?   they would more likely fat the shot and hit it out of the toe if the shaft is too weak and it was overpowered

so if baddog is now playing with too stiff a shaft   it wont droop as much everything else bieng equal the head would be in a higher than with the  old clubs which had much softer shafts

Dunno, I'm lost now tbh I think we agreeing
