Have just moved here from Wales, and have only had one golf lesson! Can anyone reccomed a good course for lessons? It will need to be fairly accessable though as I am a University student who has to rely on busses!

Hi James I lived there for many years but my info maybe out of date. The Lillybrook GC in Charlton Kings is a short walk from the Bradley Rd bus stop. Take a bus from the town centre. This is at least a frequent service. There are a few courses dotted around the greater outskirts but the service will be patchy.

There are some courses but having to rely on bus transport could limit you to getting to them. Are you a student at the University of Gloucestershire? I was there 92 to 95 and they had a good sports network.

Don't bother with Lillybrook for lessons, no range etc. You are probably best off going to Brickhampton which is between Cheltenham & Gloucester and on a main bus route although the walk up the drive will take a wee while. As one of the guys said there is probably a uni golf club that organise trips to practise etc. Sherdans is a really welcoming club for beginners (I started there) but is nearer to tewkesbury and off the main bus route. Despite living in Cheltenham I have lessons lessons at Cirencester Golf Club (30 mins drive south) & a play at Puckrup Hall (30 mins drive north). Good luck & avoid the dodgy initiation people!!!

Hi James, I'm a member at Brickhampton, like said above the range facilities are prob the best localy. For Lessons I'd have to say Ed at Cirencester, but I'm biased as he's one of my wifes friends husband!

Andy Are they letting you hit drivers on the range at Brickhampton yet? I love the range but find the limitation frustrating!

_of_18th_n_berwick.JPG) Ed at Ciren' is good...it'll take 3 days to get there by bus from Cheltenham though! (Unless the bus follows the old road and stops outside the course!)

Try Dave Finch at Cleeve Hill, nice bloke plenty of room up there with a practise green you can hit say from an 8i up too. 01242.672592 Buses go past frequently to Winchcombe. Dont mention the Hammers though!!

I used to play at Cleeve thirty plus years ago. I still remember the par 3's; two over quarries and two through the gorse. Any balls you find are probably mine!

I'll check about the drivers when I'm up there next. I know they were planning on extending the net and it should have been done by now.

Brickhampton allow drivers on the range after dark - as in when people have finished on the 18 hole, one hole of which runs behind the range. It was there that someone got hit/nearly hit by a ball off the range. Hence the 'ban'. Having said that, when we were there a couple of weeks ago, whilst there was light in the sky (we fitted in a go round the 9 hole after that time), there were people there with drivers. I guess if you keep it quiet, and don't hit 'em over the fence, you probably are ok. But don't quote me on that! They are also trying to overturn the refusal of planning permission to improve/raise the fence at the end of the range. Petition duly signed. As said before, the bus runs past there every 10 minutes (I think) during most of the day. Regards, Pete

Hi James, Brickie range is good , I know the Uni runs a course of lessons as a friend is going on them so may be worth checking out not sure where they run them though. Sherdons is a better range and a cracking little course (although can get busy) If you or any of the other lot on this forum that live in Chelt or Glos fancy meeting up some time for a game then get in touch. ( I live between the 2) Out of interest

JIM BOW 2 I just lurve Cleeve Hill. It is a great course. I try to play it every time we visit the area. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it is my most favouritist course of completely all time ever - except for the sheep poo.

Dec - Ah yes the sheep poo!; I'd forgotten that particular hazard. That and Sunday afternoon walkers getting in the way with there bloomin' kites. I must get back there for old times sake.
