I'd say Kingsbarns - £160 if not from Scotland £68 if you are. IF you give them a phone now you MAY just sneak a tee time.

Also there are a number of Open qualifying courses on the way up. Leven, Ladybank, Scotscraig. Then there are a few nice courses including Crail Balcomie, Anstruther, Elie and St Andrews Bay.

Spidey, I haven't played St Andrews Old, New or Jubilee, so can't comment first hand - but assuming you can't get on the Old Course, those I know who have played the New highly recommend it.

I've played the Devlin @ St Andrews Bay, and seen some of the holes on the Torrance. The Devlin is "OK", and the Torrance looks the same, but they are not "must play" courses.

Kingsbarns, however, is - play this if you can. it's a cracker. I don't know if you hail from Scotland or not, but if you and your companions can prove Scottish residence, you can get on for around £68 each (although you can only book 2 weeks in advance under this scheme).

A few miles beyond Kingsbarns is Crail (Balcomie) - this is another fantastic links course, and another definitely worth playing.

We also won a comp last year which involved a weekend in St Andrews, with a round on the Devlin at St Andrew's Bay. As McStumpy says, not a "must" course at all. We also played the New course, well worth it! The organisers of the comp had arranged for us to have the option to play Kingsbarns for £75. Best green fee I have ever spent. One of the best courses I have set foot on, let alone played.

Fife is full of truly great golf courses and I'm sure you won't go wrong with any of the suggestions you've had.

For me the one I enjoy playing the most is Lundin Links. The course is always in great condition, the members are amongst the most welcoming I've ever met and the course has got the best set of par 3's I've played, and not one of them over 180 yards.

At £70 for a day ticket it's a bargain if you get 36 holes in.

I would play Kingsbarnes without a shady of a doubt. My uncle plays up there alot and sais this is the best course there. They apparently treat you great and give you some really cool goodies!
