Ok here's my swing, sorry i only have a down the line.

It's my 3 iron.

Yes there is.... lots of over swing and probably too much movement in my backswing, but it works for me.

Pull it to bits please

Looks like Youtube have deemed it unfit for human viewing, they've pulled it from their site!!!

Definately too handsy and inside, Damon, but look good throughthe ball.

One thing though. You say it works for you, but you have a 20 handicap. How long have you been playing? Thats not a dig, just wonder what your goals are.

well hcp is 18 now, last medal played was mid October. can i change my sig?

But since then i've had lots of practice time and have been scoring much better - high 70's and a few 81, 82's - Although only from the yellows, i've been hitting much more consistently and straighter, chipping is MILES better.

I've had the odd round for years, but only really started playing regularly a year and a half ago. The plan was to really go for it last year but other things got in the way. This year with the time i should have, i have set a target of 14 but i hope i can get lower than that.

For an 18 handicap, thats a pretty good swing. And if it works, and your improving steadily I wouldn't throw it all away by starting again.

23rdman is right that on your backswing you take the club away on the inside, and this is probably due to being a bit wristy in the immediate takeaway of the club.

At the point where the shaft reaches horizontal (i.e. the point after takeaway, where the bigger shoulder muscles are about to kick in), I was told to strive to have the shaft pointing directly in line with your feet/shoulders, clubface pointing vertically up. By doing this you retain a bit more width at the bottom of the swing, as you haven't cocked your wrists as much.

Looks pretty good. Lots of good things, stance, posture and you look like you are aligned pretty well. It may be the viewpoint but looked like you blocked that to the right which will happen if you are very inside to out as you appear to be. But its better to be attacking the ball from the inside rather than outside.

I suggest you shorten your backswing. It will give you more control and consistency.

Creo, any tips on how to go about shortening it?

I've tried, but once i start going for it again, it comes back.

re the block, no it was a small draw(something i get with most irons up to about 8 iron). It must be the viewpoint, like when you see it on tv as well it always looks like it starts off to the right.

Thanks for the tips as well guys, i'll give it a go next practice session.

Damon, the long backswing is partly caused by the overactive hands early on. If you concentrate on keeping the clubhead outside the hands going back you'll find your swing gets shorter.

One way to do this is to push down with the left hand as you start the takeaway. This stops you getting to wristy and will get you on plane. Try it and see on video, mate.

Another thing that will help is to keep more tension in your left leg, or even practice with 70% weight on your left side. This will shorten your swing with no other adjustments.

Other than that practice making 1/2 and 3/4 swings until you see that you'll hit it just as far as with a full loose swing.

I'm no pro either, buddy, but I watch and learn from the guys who are.

Damon - the easiest way is to just feel that you are taking a shorter swing, such as a half swing, you will be surprised how long that will be even though it feels short! Ask a mate to watch and get him to tell you the length, adjust how you feel the length is until is about right, i.e. the club horizontal to the ground. It will feel very short at first! But persevere and practise and it will become natural. It is worth the effort, once you have ingrained it will be there. Maybe not so important at the moment but when you want to shoot in the 70's consistently you will need the control and consistency that a shorter swing will give you.

ok, i'll try these things. Many thanks to both of you.

yeah . what i see .

u take it on the inside a lot . at the top of the backswing ur hips look over rotated and if im right it looks as if this is caused by the heel of the left foot is of the ground. this is almost certainly why u over swing.  combined with a wristy approach. .

the way i would suggest fixing these things is

1: the take away u want to feel u take it extremely outside the line almost as if u pick it up in front of u to take it back. put a club down on you target line just inside the ball line and try and take it outside of this line.

2: the best way to stop ur hips over rotating and giving u a long backwing. is to toe ur right foot in and keep ur right knee flexed. this will stop ur hips rotating as much and shorten the swing.  (bewar this will feel uncomfortable but once u can get used to it ur muscles will memorize the lesser turn of ur hips. if u combine this with what creosote said then this will almost certainly give u a shorter swing. and stop u from pushing the ball. as u did in the video.

Looks like david toms has the same problem pushing the ball.

Thanks Adam, i can't tell if my heel lifts or it's just the left side of my foot from the video. i'll ask some one to watch tomorrow.

Looks like i'm going to be busy!!!

he sends the ball in line with his feet and setup position. if u watch urs and can stop it at impact like i did ull see what i mean.

but forget about that. seriously try what ive said. it should definatley remove the overswing. and if u use the first move away from the ball then that will stop u from tajking it inside. it will put the club back on plane and allow u to get a bit more aggresive through the ball .

I'm obviously a shit golfer, but my pro has done three or four of these and slowed them down for me. The thing you do that I also do is almost completely straighten your right leg. We've been working on stopping me doing this (I have to feel like I'm sitting down).

Other than that, I wish I was like you!

check again stuart . stop the video at the top of the swing .

i have been working on the same thing with my pro. its very hard aint it . but its worthwhile doing it . so keep up the work on it. stops u from rasing and lowering for a better strike.

Damon, I forgot to mention that thats a great improvement in your play, mate. Well done!

Oh, and you change your handicap details by going into your profile and then your details. It's on your nickname.
