They're too expensive

Well the end of last summer I found the Wilson iWound http://www.thesportshq.com/ProductDetails.asp?PCLinkID=1641

I used to use the Pro V1x, then I was given an iwound and found it just as soft but 15/20 yards longer. As you can see they are only 12.99 + P&P for 24 balls! and according to the write up's Wilson pitched them up against Pro V's, but they weren't quite as good (and not the same Kudos). At this price they're worth a shot, and at the same site you can get a new Square brolly for 1p if you order the balls!

Blimey - I've never seen this Wilson ball before and yet it has reviews on the web going back to 2002. Where have shed loads of these suddenly sprung up from?

...and why didn't they catch on?

I just bought myself 3 dozen Callaway HX Tour 56 yesterday because my Strata Tour Ultimates have nearly run out.

Neither ball is 'clicky' as otherwise I would not buy them. The one thing I do like about ProV1s is their soft feel and I think that the new version is even better for green side spin. Its just that as the OP says they are just too expensive.

Like the look of that Wilson had I seen it yesterday I would probably had tried some before buying the Callies. Luckily I have read some of the reviews and some say they are like stones of the putter.

Living in the West Country there is nowhere close enough to buy the Inesis.

Strata Tour Ultimates - weren't these the ones they based the Ben Hogan ball on Jim -  they were an OK ball.

I have a couple of sleeves of Strata Tour Aces that I won't use because they sound lousy off the putter.

HX Tour 56 - very nice but not as good wearing as the ProV1.

Durable is the word you're looking for Chris

...and a bit irritating, when the mud sticks in those half a dozen deeper dimples.

Not a problem when you're on the fairway mate - clean & drop this time of year.

Now then, if I can just find a fairway...

Spot on Colin, I bought 2 doz of the i wounds after a tip off from a mate and they're the dog's. Stop quicker than a pro v and a few yards longer.

Taz

The Strata Tour Ultimates Original version  (orange swirl) were about 5th in the line of Strata golf balls (of which there are about 16 balls carrying the Strata name).  I found the Strata Tour Ultimate 2 (red swirl) a bit too 'clicky' but good for slower greens and the Strata Tour Ultimate + (blue swirl) had such a soft cover that a ball would not even last a round.

I found the Strata Tour Aces did not have the green side spin of the original Tour Ultimate and I agree with you a bit on the hard side off the putter.

No change then, Bridgestones don't last a round, neither do HX56s, the only decent ball that does imo is the Pro V1 or harder balls like Srixons

They haven't caught on because of the price, originally they were £40 a dozen and at that price the Pro V's won hand's down. But now at £13 for 2 dozen for my money nothing comes close. Seriously they are the first ball that I could really see a difference with soft, long and stops on a sixpence.

At the end of the day it's all down to personal preference, if it weren’t we would all play the same ball?

Most of the comments are fair enough, but the guy who say's 'it's like a stone' is talking out of his backside.

If you can’t get your head around NOT playing a Titliest, then it's not for you. And who's to say my words any better than the guy who says's he'd prefer to play a Topflite. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any magazine tests or comparisons, so the only way to find out is give them a go for yourself.

The title of this thread is Alternatives to Pro V1's, and that is what Wilson aimed to give with the iWound, so I stand by my recomendation.

In terms of durability, I have to say that I find the Inesis TD Tour lasts longer than the ProV1. I still play both, and have noticed this for a while.

Colin - there was a test of about 100 bals in last month's Todays Golfer - all the usual suspects mind.

Yeah, I read it , and they did one about 12 month ago which I still got, but neither include the Wilson.
