My swing : I have improved my ballstriking considerably but my swing looks like a cows ass, especially from the side on view. What do you think ? I play off 24 and suffered from a bad reverse pivot/slice, I have fought hard to get rid of this and its going slowly...

Comments are welcome and appreciated as always.

Can I ask what you're trying to achieve in your swing now, mate? I don't want to discourage you, but I think this is technically much worse than your old swing.

I was trying to come more inside the line on the takeaway to combat the slice I had. Sort of taking it away more behind me if you get my drift.

way too inside mate - the more you go inside the more you'll come outide on the way down and slice it even further.

Yep, way to far inside and way too flat at the top. lower body action is too loose as well.

23rdman - How do you mean "way too flat at top" ?

I think what 23rd is saying is that at the top of your back swing your hands are well below the plane of your shoulders. This gives your a very flat swing plane.

Also taking the club away so much on the inside encourages you to move the ball back in your stance. I bet you have the ball too far back in your stance....

I don't think you have corrected your slice, I just think you have replaced that fault with another.

BTW don't be too disheartened, I too used to take the club away too inside. But in 2 years have dropped mu hcap from 20s to 12, and it will be single figures when we get to qualifying comps. So stick with it, get the fundamentals right and you will drop quite quick.

Hi Dundee, im in the same boat (in that im trying to change my swing too).

My first observation is your stance is very closed to the target, (im the complete opposite).

my stance was way open and on trying to get it more straight to the target i started slicing the ball with my irons for england (which i didn`t before) and all because i was taking the club back way too much on the inside.. Once i figured that out and started taking the club back (more parallel to my stance) i starting hitting clean straighter irons again.. its a long road, and i would say that the video camera is a great tool and keep filming and making adjustments.. Get some swing software (v1 Home) and slow your swing down.. you`ll see a lot more in slow motion..

Best Of luck Paul.

Personally I wouldnt worry too much about being flat or inside, while its generally seen as a fault it can be an asset if you can get the timing right. But in your case its somewhat academic as you have a really bad move in leaning to your left on the backswing, or reverse pivot as its called. You arent swinging the club in a rotational method, you are taking it back and dipping your head and torso to the left on the backswing. You need to work on keeping yourself centered during the backswing, and your head staying behind the ball until after impact, sort of hitting past yourself. Now here's a thing, on the side view after your shot you take a sorta post shot practise swing and its MUCH better, more relaxed, better tempo and nice finish with far less dip to the left. So you can do it!

Granted, Creo, but in D-S's case it's way overcooked. He'll never get back to the ball with consistency from that position.

So where do I go from here ? I think my right leg needs to stay still for one, and perhaps my hips are turning too much on the b/s.  Looking at swingvision pro swings, they seem to turn their shoulders whilst the hips stay, its almost freakish !!

DS - the idea of the golf swing is that its a rotational movement around the central vertical axis of the body. The less bits you move to achieve that, and the the less you bend any of those axis parts the more torsional energy you will store for release into the impact. The ideal would be to turn your shoulders 90* while keeping your hips pointing straight forward as they are at setup, even Tiger cant do that, but the more the shoulders turn relative to the least hip turn the more power you will achieve. Thus the power is derived from this torsional rotational movement not swaying or using your body to thrust at the ball. Of course none of us actually do that and subjugate a good belt at the ball instead. Which is fine, just as long as you can replicate that belt every time then bob's your uncle. Or better stated bygolf only true guru John Jacobs "The sole purpose of the golf swing is to produce a correct, repetitive impact, and the method employed is of no significance so long as it is repetitive."

I feel I need to start from scratch.....Ben Hogan book to come back out.

You dont need to start from scratch. Just stand still while you belt it, not bend and move your body like a bendy moving thing with St Vitus Dance.
That's it in a nutshell. Take the club back with quiet hands keeping the clubhead outside the hands and rotate around your spine. If it doesn't need to move don't move it.

I'm not going to add an opinion because there is clearly so much in your head at the moment and that is probably half the problem! But, I will recommend two sites / instructors both of whom to me have some excellent articles which I think you will appreciate, both because of your 'faults' and your technical nature.

First up, http://tomstickneygolf.com. Recommended this page before and I still do! Have a look at the Tom's Tips section, especially the stuff on hip motion and 'x' factor. I think this will help you keep your base more solid, like you describe here:

"Looking at swingvision pro swings, they seem to turn their shoulders whilst the hips stay, its almost freakish !!"

Then I would also suggest you look at http://jeffrittergolf.com/. He has lots of videos all of which I rate highly. The ones in particular I would suggest are called something like, 'Common Faults and Fixes - The Backswing' and 'Cure your slice' which is about how an inside takeaway can lead to an over the top swing. You may find it easier to find these videos on YouTube as opposed to watching them on his site.

Good luck! Let me know what you think!

Chris
