Wrist Hinge and slicing
Not cocking

As a slicer I have tried a lot of things to get it under control. But recently it has occurred to me that the way I hold my wrists at the top is effecting my clubface at impact.

Best way to describe it is hold our your hands palm down, then bend the wrist upwards (so the palms are facing forward). That's my old wrist position at the top. If you recreate a downswing with the hand in this position... you can see it's more likely to stay open.

I have since concentrated on not hinging the wrist and it's made a huge difference to the slice. I've always known I hinged, but didn't think it had an impact before.

I thought I'd share it in case it might help someone else (there's no one cure for a slice of course).

This was one of the reasons i was slicing. Along with open shoulders, bad take away not using my hips.

This is a really good tip and i fixed it through constantly trying to keep control of my wrists and not letting the clubhead move them in anyway.

I am still cocking them, but I'm focussing on making sure I don't hinge. Sometimes this means going so far as to hinge them slightly the opposite way.

It definitely works for me. It's something so simple too!

There's a great feeling to get into a flat wristed top of the BS position I was taught. It's to feel like you're holding a waiters tray with your right hand at the top. Try it in the mirror and you'll see.

23rdman doesn't that promote the kind of hinge niblick is trying to avoid ? often called left hand cupping , which opens the face , the other wrist hinge which doesn't is like "thumbing a lift", in fact that's one of my  swing thoughts at the top of the backswing , "thumbs up".

There's a little confusion here, and it's entirely my fault. I should have said that I was hingeing the LEFT hand upwards. So Rob, I think 23rdman was responding to me saying that I almost actively encourage my left wrist to hinge down rather than up - and this would cause my right hand palm to face upwards as he said.

But you're right - the thumbs up idea is (to me) cocking the wrist and beneficial to power. Hingeing is bending the other way - as if revving a motorbike.

Hopefully I've made a better fist (pun intended) of describing it this time.

Would appreciate any comments on my grip firstly, and secondly this video really helped me with my over active wrists and has helped with my slice, must complete shoulder turn though.

Anyone else seen or tried this

im sure i said this on another thread, but yeah its a common problem leave the club open at the top.

I say put an elastic badn round your wrist and put a lollipop stick in it. if you cup your wrist you will feel the stick digging in to th back of your hand that should stop you doing it sharpish

yip if you hinged upwards the stick would never hit your palm . niblick left hand up isn't that closing the face hooking not slicing? isn't  left hand down cupping "waiters tray" the hogan anti hook technique ? i'm confused now , but like you said cock don't hinge

no i mean put it on the back of your hand, if the left hand go upwards its open level is sqaure limp wristed closed

yes you guys are correct "just messed about with a club" , when i was young i often put my shoes on the wrong feet , come to think of it still do

heres a theory for ya, the reason for wrist cock is it promotes a steeper plane so you hit down on the ball and so your hands stay ahead of the club prmoting lag, but a lot of high handicapper beginers dont hold ther lag at all, bit like me.

so having no wrist break for the aformention players may be benifical, as less movemnt = less to go wrong. i cant hit some good shots with barly no wrist cock, watch the womens tour so many of hers players wirst cock extremly late or it seems not at all.

Josh. Wrist cock (not hingeing) provides a lot of power in the swing. It's a bit like the way a whip works. The last little flip of the tail of the whip is what makes it sting!

I was watching the John Jacobs DVD and he said that women are early hitters. Their wrists uncock very early. Not sure if that's to do with wrist strength - but it's one of the reasons many women hit 'off the toes' (ie. they rise a little bit through the hit).

Holding a lag shouldn't be conscious - it's merely a natural occurance. I don't think about it at all, but I achieve it.
