I went for a driver fitting with Jon at Ironwrx today. I've been fitted for drivers in the past and its always been a bit of a failure, for various reasons, but thought what the heck, why not, as I enjoyed the process of fitting I did with Jon for a recent article I penned at GM, even if it didnt produce anything tangible for me I thought it would be fun.

Anyway, he has some screw in type fitting thingy where the shafts can be swapped into the same head in a few seconds. It meant I could hit many different shafts with the exact same head so could get a real feel for which performed best for me. This I liked. Dunno how many shafts he had, maybe a dozen to fifteen in both reg and stiff flexes. Many I was familiar with and some I wasnt. Hit them all, discarded most after a couple of hits, and there were a couple that I hit best, and one I hit very well. He kindly loaned me that combo to try so rushed back down my own range hit a few then went on course and played a quick 9 to see if it performed as well in the heat of battle as it did in testing. It did! So have asked Jon to order me one and fit it, most likely in my current Burner head, but thats not 100% decided yet.

I really enjoyed the process, I felt I was more part of the selection process than the fittings I have had in the past. Jon's a pretty sensible and down to earth chap, and quite perceptive, couple of times on shafts I hit reasonably well he commented that I was going after it, and I realised that I had been, in other words, I mean I was having to whack the thing to get the power.

Anyway, if you have the chance to go to Jon or a fitter with this system, I recommend it.

Sounds good.

I suspect ironwrx. is bit too far to travel, (for me) but you say 'or a fitter with this system', are there any in East Anglia?

No idea, sorry. But there must be someone who uses this system in your neck of the woods.

He doesnt charge for fitting. I am at the stage where I wouldnt pay for being fitted but then if the fitter makes a couple of quid from his work assembling the club afterwards that fine with me. I think you are ooop north so would prolly only be worth his travel time and petrol and stuff if he did a few fittings at one time. I know he is busy and may not be able to spend the amount of travel time etc, but why not PM and ask him, maybe you could bribe him with lunch!

Sounds like the Optifit - Were they Cally heads he was using Creo?

I tried similar at the UK Golf show, Oziks, Graffaloy etc.

I went to Rustington Golf Centre, where they had this, no idea what it is called. I was trying out various TM heads on various shafts.  Sorry Sham, it's another one down south..

Cobra, Titleist and Taylormade all have Similar systems.

They also have them for their Irons too.

I had a play with them for a Snake Eyes and KZG fitting at Hylands Golf club last year.

Its a very good way of trying loads of different Shafts to find the one that suits your swing best.

They were Golfsmith heads, all looked identical to me but differing lofts. I guess all the manufacturers/components/OEMs now have something similar. Good system(s).  I liked having the advice of someone knowledgeable and mature who could nudge me gently now and then, rather than these snot nosed wannabe pro kids at the OEM places. But then, thats my way

Our pro has the same system from Titleist both with drivers and irons. For me it seems to make comparisons more valid and naturally opens up a huge number of combinations.

What was your experience like at Rustington, Birdie Boy? I'm planning to get a new driver this summer, and it looks like a good place to try a few out.
