Having had a look at the clone clubs thread, I realised that despite being a bit of a brand snob myself - I hadn't got a clue what brand clubs any of my three playing partners were using on Monday. I also doubt very much that they knew what brand equipment I was using. The only time it has ever come to my attention is when one of the guys starts talking about it - or has something particularly unusual, like a pink shaft or a putter that recieves Radio 2.
Do we notice?
How do you draw attention to the driver that you have just bought and had shafted and pured to your own specification?
When you tell your playing partners do they yawn?
|
 |
Why would you want to?? It won't help you put it any closer to the hole knowing that your mate has just bought xxxx driver.
Surely the whole point of buying nnew equipment is self-improvement. It should make you feel more confident over the ball and inspire you to play better golf

Blimey, Al, looks like this thread went a bit unnoticed for a bit as well. I'm often interested in players' kit and their reasons for using it and often ask about it, particularly if it's a specialist item. I'm more than happy to tell anyone about my gear as well if they ask but my experience is that most people are more interested in (talking about) their own kit than hearing about other people's.

Im very ineterest in some labels , particularly those peeking out of the back of foxy lady golfers garments ....

'bit of a brand snob myself' – like it, you're an honest man AL.
'When you tell your playing partners do they yawn? - You're probably not a million miles away?
Marketing and perception say's that it can't be as good as the name that 'X' (player on the PGA Tour) plays with and it didn't cost as much so it can't be good. Not to mention that production line construction must be far more precise, accurate and reliable than the one hand made by a professional club maker or even the one at home with the right tools? It says so in the magazine they were reading!
Buying the right club should provide you with more self- importance; sorry I mean self-improvement on the course. Richard - 'most people are more interested in (talking about) their own kit than hearing about other people's'; When you say 'own kit' I would imagine their talking about big name clubs and regurgitation 'forgiveness' and all that stuff they read... LOL
Just being contentious…..

 Ahhhh nice thread!
Branding... it's all in the branding (as my CE says - he's an advertising guru).
Bollocks I say. If I can hit my hundred quid driver better than someone else with their five hundred quid driver, despite the fact that theirs has got the "right?" badge on it.
I try not to draw attention to the clubs I use or the balls I play or the clothes I wear... It really doesn't matter that much. What is important is that what you use works for you. If people decide to ask about the clubs I can bore them stupid, but to be honest, unless you can use the kit properly, why would you want to draw attention to the fact that it cost more / is the most recent / has the best shaft / can receive Radio 2 (LMAO)
Isn't it (or shouldn't it?) be about the game...

Once you start delivering the goods, you'll get plenty of questions as to what your hitting but I'm with Dunc, whats it matter, seen plenty of Callaway shod players in the cabbage,It's probably why I'm a sex symbol,if you've got to ask,you ain't goddit:)

Nothing worse than coming across as Mr Al Cervik - All the gear and No Idea... got to say I do try to play with low HC's who typically are pretty obsessed with their gear but can really play with it. It clearly does make a big difference at that level.
Its not about price though as I demoed a DR4E Diamond faced £800 driver last week and it was the worst piece of junk I ever hit...Maybe its just me but the technology ads to the pleasure of golf and I have few vices left now. As anydody knows, its the Indian not the arrows

i wouldnt give tuppence for the clubs in the bag of one of myclubs best players
sure, they are known major brands but look like they are twenty years old and are about to fall apart
the point is that this guy plays off low single figures with a bag of mixed brand clubs (a couple of the irons are missing) that (to be kind) are in weathered condition and wouldnt attract an impressed glance by a 7 year old.
They guy obviously isnt a brand snob but is a very good golfer...
...I'm much more impressed by someone who can play the game than someone who has all the latest and greatest gear and buys the latest wedge/driver/putter/ball retriever when he hasnt learned how to use his previous club!
if I found a set of clubs made by Rowenta/Sanyo/Trabant for £50 that I could hit better, then my MP-32's would be straight on ebay tomorrow.

 |
your point ? i think people pay for branded clubs in that exact hope not some secret fashion show
|
 |
I'm always interested, only because I want "a go". Love to try out all the clubs. Don't necessarily want to buy them, just like having a go!
|
 |
No harm in window shopping, I say... ;-)
(ducks, waits for the inevitable double entendres)
