Armed only with a gift voucher I descended upon American Golf, Wakefield, and bought some new irons.
After much deliberation I chose a set of Jack Nicklaus Q4 irons. I am playing this morning and will provide an interim report later.
Does anybody use these? What are they like?
I'll leave my feedback later and hopefully collect your views on the matter.
Cheers

 You didnt try them out?!
|
 |
Yeah, sort of.
The only way to test them was in the net, in the store. AG don't have driving ranges in this part of the world.
I tried a few sets of irons. The problem is you only see the first 6ft of flight. It is impossible to tell whether the ball will hang a right into the trees.
I played with them today and found them to work well. I've since set 3-8 up with a draw bias. Slicing is fairly consistent with my game, whatever clubs I use. I did find that the clubs hit longer than my previous irons, this meant that I was hitting much shorter shots into the green.
I scored just under 100, which for me is more than reasonable. I am certainly no worse off than I was before and I have my very first set of, brand new, shiny irons.
I shall try them at the range tomorrow and see if I am hitting them anywhere near straight, since the adjustment.
I will post a proper review after I have played a few games with them.
Cheers

As an 'aside' here, does purchasing with a gift voucher put a different light on things against a cash purchase.
|
 |
It seemed to have some effect in one AG store. I posted on the General forum.
It shouldn't do. Somebody has still forked out the requisite amount of cash to the company, in the first place.
I got the distinct impression that the voucher became their licence to rip more cash out of my pocket.
I went to another AG store and did the same deal. This time I didn't produce the voucher until the amount had been rung into the till and I was in the act of presenting my credit card.

of course youve done the right thing
everybody knows buying new equipment always the best thing!

Any iron change is going to mess your game up at first, please bear this in mind
From what I've seen of the Q4 irons they look very .......... cavity backed and trampol-iny faced.
At a guess they will be great until you get around the greens, change the 8,9 irons & wedges for blades and you'll be ok.
But I could be wrong

Hi Trev,
I played with them on Monday. The short game was very good, no major problems. I stuggled with slicing the longer shots, part of my game I'm afraid.
I've now set 3-8 up to draw. I took the 3i (hybrid) and the 6i to the driving range today and found them to be long and straight.
I'm playing 9 holes with my Dad tomorrow, I'll see how the adjustments have gone.
Cheers

Cheers trev,
I may have more to report tonight. I'm sure that new clubs are not the panacea for all ills - still, you never know.
|
 |
How have you set up 3-8 to draw??
|
 |
Quite easy, you are provided with a selection of weights and suitable instructions.
I followed these and the clubs were set. Not all shots draw, some still fade (but not as badly as before), many are straightish and "duck hooks" are spectacular.
However, I am more accurate with these clubs and I am having to learn to judge distance better, they tend to fly much further than my old irons.
