Hi All - Can any of you give me some information on "Dunlop Max" clubs? I've been trawling the internet but can't find a single mention. I'd like to know how they rate against other budget clubs and whether they'd be suitable for a beginner.
There's a full set incl. stand bag with 70% off in my local sports shop (originally £399, now £120) but I can't find any guidance on their quality etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally I would not go that way..
I doubt they were ever £399.00 and for £120.00 there are in my opinion much better options out there.
Recently I picked up a set of Howson GBH assassins from Elite Golf Online (see shopping partners) - These were on sale at a golf course shop for £250.00..
I got the exact same ones delivered to my door for £92.00..
Not everyones cup of tea but I like them..
Have a good look at the shopping partners before you buy and let us know what you get...

stay clear of dunlop stuff, they have very bad reviews (heads flying off, shafts being poor and very twisty ect).
For £120 you could buy second hand stuff from e-bay and make a set up that will be as good as anything about the £350 mark It just depends if you want shiney clubs or decent clubs?

I've heard about club heads flying off etc. Its also to do with the material their made from so expect 12 months before forking out again.
You should also be aware of 'false marketing' (my own terminology), but puiblishers use it for books as well, the list price is double what they actually want to sell at, i.e. Chris Moyles new book, has been released at £20 a copy, but with 50% off, it only costs a tenner. It goes on everywhere, but especially it seems with celebrity biographies and golf club starter sets.
If your on a budget, might I suggest having a look at pricerunner.co.uk. If you enter options for a right handed male golfer in the set of clubs bit, max price £150, and to include putter & bag, then you should get 38 different products, including some of the 'better' bottom end of market makes, including: RAM Concept X @ £135, with steel shafted irons and graphite shafed woods. Theres also an MD Golf 1/2 set if your just thinking about things, for 60 quid.

Joroni, Trev, Marcus,
Thanks for the advice, which I've just read. I really wish I'd been able to resist the temptation of buying them this morning now. :-)
I'm a complete beginner and only want something to get me through a year. If I'm still enjoying golf in 12 months I'll be looking for better clubs anyway. By the sound of things, most of the heads will have flown off my dunlop clubs by then . . .

 |
Just to make you feel worse (sorry), it's true about the heads. I got a set of Dunlops as I didn't want to spend any cash 'til I'd tried the game. 2 of the set now have heads which are 1/2 inch out of the shaft and about to part company. Has anyone actually been hit by one of these ?

If you are looking for a complete set of beginners clubs but with irons better quality than the Dunlop, I have got a set in my shed brand new unused with double strap stand bag 460cc driver 3 and 5 woods, putter with about 3 dozen grade A balls tees etc for just £75 plus postage of £13.
I bought the irons when I was considering a change to steel shafts as they are quite a well made copy of the Taylormades I use.

 |
Now you're just rubbing it in :-)
Would have gone for your offer Jim, if I hadn't blown the cash already. There's no way my wife will authorise more money for clubs until next year.
|
 |
Return them, seriously, why not? Even second hand you have rights you know.
|
 |
IMO, if your intention is just to use them for a year, you'll be fine. Thats kind of what I did, but it was always in the back of my mind that I wanted better. and I'll put money on the fact that your next set will be top notch & custom fitted
For what its worth, if you think they'll do, and to be fair, they probably will for a year - how much are you going to use them - especially now its winter? I would suggest making use of this period as a beginner with lots of driving range and lots of lessons ready for spring.
Good luck & enjoy.

I use Dunlop 65i Irons and have had no problems at all ("touch wood"), in fact I am playing as well as I have ever played and really like the clubs. I use them on the course once a week and on the range a few times a week and they are still in great condition, I think I have had them about 3 and a half years.
|
 |
just make sure u dont buy the graphite shafts.......
|
 |
I purchased a few Dunlop 65i graphite shafted irons last year and the 7 iron head came away from the shaft by about 1/4", Ive since purchased Dunlop Max steel shafted clubs and have had no problems at all with them. I must admit I only started playing golf last september and just wanted some cheap clubs to start me off so I have no experience of more expensive clubs to compare with. For me though the Dunlop Max irons have been an excellent buy, I didnt buy a full set just a couple at a time (£5.39 each) from Sportsworld.
|
 |
The max clubs are good. the 65i are fine but they do break. My 1 driver (graphite) split just after one year, but I only paid £7 for it from sportsworld, so how can I complain, they are very good value for money.

 |
I bought some of them from SportSoccer when I was just starting to see if wanted to play golf or not. They were fine for a short period but if you are serious about giving it a proper go I would get some second hand good quality cavity back clubs from somewhere like www.golfbidder.co.uk as they will be more beneficial to you. The dunlops are a basic club, the shafts are not very good and the heads are very soft and damage easily. The others are right, you can still cancel your order or return them? Just my honest opinion.

 |
I must say, for that kind of money I'd rather have had a set of Hippo XXLs from pricebustergolf (currently £125).
In fact, the way I'm hitting my Pings I still might :-(

I've just bought a set of Dunlop Max clubs, with stand bag for £100 (before reading this post!). I've only been playing for three weeks, so they're gonna get some 'novice abuse' from me...
I bought the steel shaft set, as a friend advised me not to buy cheap alloy or graphite clubs. I'm testing them tomorrow for the first time - I'll let you guy's know how I get on (and eventually how long they last)!

I purchased a package set of Dunlop ' Max' graphite clubs last December. As a 'senior', I only started playing end of the summer'06. I have found the clubs fine, and I suppose for the price £119 from Sports World, it is true you get what you pay for. With the clubs, golf bag, brollie- how can you honestly complain? And at 65, even if I make rapid progress, don't think I'd know how to tell the difference when using a 'Max' or a Ping. Just enjoying the moment and the learning curve.

i've just sold an old set of donnay evolution clubs to upgrade to a better set. I saw the dunlop max steel set for £60 in sportsworld n i was estatic. i'd recently bought the 7 wood (steel) to the set n fell in love with it. there a dream to play with.
A full set for £60 is a "steel"

iv just bought a full set of Dunlop max steals great but at £99 from sportsworld, if your only going to play once a week then they will be perfect, my only bit of advice would be to get a resucue club and a better driver, but the rest are fine.
