At present i have to 2 sets, Callaway X-16's with stiff graphite shaft and Callaway Fusion with the Nippon Steel shaft.

I am play off 15, Hit my Driver 250-270 yards, & 7 iron about 150 yards.

Now my Choice, I strike the ball better with the X-16, and should do really as they are off set and are designed as a game improvement iron.

While with the Fusion's i have been struggling a little for consistancy with them, but when the sweet spot is hit, they are really great clubs.

So which ones do i keep?, the x-16 for the short term pleasure but hiding my swing short comming or the Fusions which in the long term, if i improve which i should hopefully serve as the better iron, the better player i get?

So when do you go from game improvement irons to "advancing" player irons?

You don't. You use the clubs that perform best for you. In your case that sounds like X16. I know a couple of pro's that use X12 and X14, and they can play, one of them in the Ryder Cup. Dont get seduced by this idea that as you improve you need to use a certain iron to match your handicap. Some better players DO benefit from blades, but most golfers dont, most do better with CB's, and GI irons. Best amateur I play with regularly who is scratch uses Titleist 704 CB's and I use TM R7 GI type irons. Play the irons that suit you and your game always.

The Fusions are avery forgiving set probably more so than the X16s if you like Callies the most logical progreession is to the pro version or Xtour forged if youa are looking for club that can be used to work the ball.

I had the Fusion for all of two weeks and found them a bit to forgiving. I have had a session with the Xtours on the range only and found them very easy to work draw/fade high/low.

When I demoed both sets I liked the Fusions much better.....better feel, longer hitting, better trajectory and nicer looking.....I would also always opt for steel shafts in my irons over graphite every time.

fwiw....I ended up with the X-Tours, in my opinion the best irons Callaway have ever made.
