I had never in my 57 years playing golf-most of it at high level-been convinced of the need to go to a clubmaker for a good driver. Whenever I felt like a change I tried top models from various manufacturers and made a choice from testing results.

Since I had my beloved Taylormade 580XD with a Mitsubishi Rayon shaft stolen two years ago I had gone through four drivers without anything like the success I enjoyed with my Taylormade.

I spotted the BigHitGolf website and contacted this Swansea company.

To cut a long story short they agreed to send a trial driver with a specification as close as possible to my 580XD. Head shape, loft, swingweight, lie, grip, and length, weight and flex of shaft.

I loved the GEEK THIS driver from the first time I hit with it. In competitions it gives me at least 20! yards on anything else I have tried and apart from hitting it very straight I can control the flight high or low and fade or draw the ball as I wish! The shaft-a 75 grammes Grafalloy Prologic Regular shaft feels absolutely perfect.

In contrast to the major golf companies who charge LOTS of money for gimmicky heads and so-so "proprietary" shafts the Geek has top,top quality components which all match together to provide a near-perfect product.

The cost to me of this trial club-£57 including postage- demonstrates very clearly-to me anyway- two things. The wisdom of having custom built/fitted clubs AND the ludicrous overcharging by the major golf companies!

Hi Boanerges.
I'm also a fan of "component" clubs and their benefits.
However they are typically no cheaper than OEM (I suspect that your £57 is a very special price for an ex-demo item - can't believe that is the new price that we can all order one for!) and their re-sale price will be terrible.
Also it can be somewhat difficult to get a decent demo.
I used to be a fan of SMT but found that I kept losing money and it was a bit of a lottery getting what was good for me.
But good to hear that your driver search is resolved.

Boney,

What is the weak part of your game now??

I realise you've played at a high standard for a long time, but what is it that's slipped?

Surely the chipping and putting must be as good as ever. Your driving the ball accurately (able to move either way), so why is the handicap where it is?

Do you aspire to lower your handicap again or are you happy with your lot?

Good morning Beast!

It's very nice to hear from you again.I'm looking forward to seeing you at Staverton and buying you a pint!

I do think that when one is elderly and probably not swinging as well as one did up to about 60-I am now 71-AND my swingspeed is dropping- AND my concentration level is nothing like as good as it was-then silly and damaging shots start creeping in.

In addition, playing on rock-hard, bare and bumpy greens and similar approaches doesnt help, nor bunkers where the depth and quality of sand is incredibly variable!

I am sure that my scores will definitely improve when we get some rain. however, off 7 I am lucky enough to win most of our Seniors competitions despite being by far the lowest handicap!

I do score MUCH better when I go away for Pro-Ams on courses like Ashridge, Hankley Common, Woburn etc where their courses are in tip-top condition. I dont know whether or not you agree with me but I reckon that bad greens affect good putters more than poor putters!

I would very much like to reduce my handicap but I have a number of personal and family problems to deal with now and they certainly affect my golf considerably.

I do hope that you are well and playing to your usual high standard and that you will be in good nick for Staverton.

Come on Boanerges we heard so much about the Adams driver you had and then the Cobra was best ever, and the TM R7 .... how long will this love affair last ?

The Geek DCT 10.5 deg is a pretty neutral driver head that the good player can flight to the shape they want. It flies lower than the loft would suggest and a 12 deg head would be more suitable for the mid handicapper.

The Grafalloy Prologic Tour 75 was the stock shaft when this driver was made, it is now the True Temper Truelite, and the present cost is £110+del. Lefthanders have £20 off at the mo, as we bought too many of them!

You can pay more if you want a specific shaft.

Yes, you really ARE like BT! Miserable, carping fellow always coming up with wrong info, probably got the most expensive equipment which you cant use as you are a CRAP golfer!

Why dont you eff off and go trouble someone else!

bighitgeoff...your quote "the good player can flight to the shape they want".

You must be joking! If you were to look at the statistics of fairways hit and off line drives of professional golfers even THEY struggle to "flight the drive to the shape they want."

You try to give the impression that a drive is a gentle carress when indeed it is a full blooded thump with little ability to alter proceedings from the top of the backswing down. Get real!!!!

Try and alter the shape of flight of many of the OEM stuff. It's mostly left or more left.

Squebo, come off it mate!!

When I was learning to play golf ALL young golfers who wanted to be considered good players learned how to shape shots with woods and irons. Admittedly, modern equipment does not allow even good golfers to shape shots so easily and the "MODERN" swing minimising hand and arm movements also militates against shaping.

In terms of LENGTH your top pros may be very impressive but not nearly as impressive as the Seniors Tour pros and good senior top amateurs as far as ACCURACY and BALL CONTROL is concerned.

I see absolutely NOTHING wrong in Geoff Dale's(BigHitGolf)comment. I hit a drive the other day over and round a tall tree on the edge of a dogleg which drew at least 15 yards and gave me a 5 wood into a 545 yard par 5!

Nice to see you haven't lost any of your usual communications skills.

It would be good-for a change-to find that you actually had even SOME communication skills!

As you have never provided any evidence of this you are clearly living up to your board name!

What did ever happen to that Adams Boany :P

Ooops. Actually the TM R7 was mine...Boa tried it in a friendly match and hit it better than he'd hit his Adams all day.

As to what has slipped in Boa's game...having partnered him, can state categorically that I'd be more than happy to play RIGHT NOW as well as Boa plays at the grand old age of 71. Especially envious of his putting which is superb.

Moppy

I have never had a driver like my DotComThis from Geoff. It goes absolutely MILES and is incredibly forgiving. The feel off the face is fantastic!

Sorry Moppy

I bought lots when you wanted one, but there aren't many lefties about!

Any lefties out there who want one at £20 off visit our website www.bighitgolf.com or email me at geoff@bighitgolf.com

B,
Like yourself, I had a TM 580XD which I thought was the dogs bo!!ocks. Then the Bang-O-matic which topped that quite easily. Still sticking with Steve Almo (designer) I fancied a Geek Failsafe but to no avail as no LH versions. Was advised that a LH DotComThis would be available. Geoff made me wait forever but it was well worth it. With the new Aldila VS proto shaft never has a club felt better than this. I wonder how many "Geek" supporters there are about.

Hi, Boanerges and Moppy, I am new to the forum and just noticed this thread. I know it's been a while since you posted, but as I am in the process of making up a Geek DCT driver, I wondered if it was just a honeymoon period with your new toys, or whether they are still going good. I have gone for the 12* head with a Creation stiff shaft, I am quite excited about it after reading some of the reviews, I have never really been happy with my driver since I had to get rid of my beloved TM XR-03 a couple of years ago, due to the political side of things. Squebo your'e way off the mark with the statement you made regarding shaping the ball, although I find it harder with the bigger heads of today, it can still be done with a little thought.

At last a thread about the DCT

I have been waiting for this.

Despite emailing the esteemed Boa about the driver without success, I have been holding off buying one and tried other drivers.

 The reasons:

1.   no idea on what shaft/ head combination is right for me (needs some sort of online fitting guide)

2.   Prices always look better in $US

3.   Marketing is geared towards long driving competitions with no case studies from your average Joe ("I gained 20 yards-Hatstand 19 H/cap" would look good on the web site)

 4.   Not having the ability to test means I have no idea what it sounds like. This may mean nothing to purists but to mid/high handicappers it is nice to hear a resounding whack rather than a dull thud which is why high handicappers never quite enjoy a ping driver no matter what the hype (perhaps a case study from your average Joe is needed again; "this sounds like a bullet going off"-Hatstand 19 H/cap would do the trick)

I would love to have a DCT being somewhat of a maverick who is impervious to marketing hype, but must admit to being scared of shelling out for a driver where I am not sure if I am fitting the right shaft or whether it will be pleasing to the eye or ear.

As a high handicapper looking for improvement, I need reassurance and knowing that it seems to be endorsed only by the elite makes me feel that perhaps  I am not up to it.

(am quite happy to be proved wrong however and am more than willing to endorse it if I can handle it)
