When I started golf I used to play a mean 1 iron off tee - granted, the rest of my game stank - but once i got better i lost the ability.

Since then my clubs got robbed so i never rebought the classic old 1 iron i had...

Noticed recently that my Cobra F-Speed's flight is a touch high for windy conditions, so do people have any experience (good/bad) with using 1 irons to keep below the wind etc?

If you are talking about a 1 iron from about 1998 or earlier than you mean a modern day 2 iron. You do no hear of any tour players currently using a one iron and very few even carry a 2 iron.

With modern big head drivers try teeing the ball down a touch, move the ball a bit further back in the stance and a hit more of a punch shot than full out drive.

I have just got a 1 iron replacement utility / hybrid, fantastic bit of kit. It has now replaced my 3 wood, never hit a proper 1 iron though

I have a Cally BB 2 iron and it's a fantastic piece of kit better than any fairway or rescue club.

My mate has a Ping Rapture 2 iron which is also a decent club.

I think that the golf press is keen to sell hybrids etc and keeps telling us all that the long irons are hard to hit.

Not in my experience and I am not a great player by any means.

i had a ping eye 2+ 1 iron but it went on the bay after i bought a mizuno 18* fli hi.the mizuno is a revelation.its forged and its longer than my old ping and you can give it some stick in the long stuff too...

i recently played a round with a taylormade 300 series 1+2 iron and when struck they fizz off the face and feel amazing when you don't it can go anywhere, the best bet is ebay or get the pro to order one in, eg mp32 2 iron is around £70

Would agree with most postings here. I used to carry a mizuno TP10 1 and 2 iron but its correct to say lofts are lower now. Can't really see the point of one now with the utility clubs around. I think Sonartec make the lowest lofted utility at about 15 degrees. Never hit it but would guess if will beat the one iron any day.

With all the hybrid technology that is out now a 1 iron is an absolutely pointless club you can't hit a 1 iron from rough, you can a hybrid.

Most people can't use them off fairways, only a tee, what's the point in that?

Taylormade make some rescue clubs with 14 deg's of loft on them

or you could get hold of a driving iron - the Mizuno MP FLI-HI looks like an MP60 longh iron 2, 3 and 4 but is much easier to hit (more offset and a bigger sole and COG).

Not quite the point, but a great quote from one of the top pro's of yesteryear who survived being struck by lightening whilst on the course and was quoted as saying: "when stuck out in the open in a thunder storm you should hold a 1-iron up in the air. You'll be safe that way because not even god can hit a 1-iron..."

I have a Ping i3 1-iron, i normaly carry in the summer for off the tee or if its windy in the winter (dont take it if its wet)
I am more accurate with my 1-iron than a driver and at my course the rough does not get cut during the summer so accuracy is priceless off the tee. Also i do not lose any distance from the tee.

My 1-iron will never be sold...

I have a set of Ping Eye 2's, 1 to SW. I use the 1 Iron and 2 Iron all the time, from the tees and the fairways, I have never had a problem with them and tend to outdrive most people using these new hybred clubs and get very good accuracy with them.

I have a mini collection of 1 irons which seldom - if ever - make it to the course. Pride of the bunch is a MacGreor VIP replica of the 1 iron Ben Hogan used for his 2nd shot on the 18th at Merion to force a playoff (& went on to win).

As a playing club a 1 iron is pretty pointless in light of the modern rescue/wood options on the course but I do use one on the range as a measure of my ball striking. If it's going well with that off the deck then there's not a lot wrong wi' the swing mechanics.

I read recently there was only 1 player still using a 1 iron and for thise season he had finally given up on it,so now there are none.I still have a Ping Eye 2 1 iron, but compared to a 4 wood is chalk and choose, simply no point in hitting one now.As Jim said, when Hogan was smashing 1 irons it was really a 2 iron and the persimmon 4 wood he had flew further, not any more.

chris your line here sounds familiar to me.
'If it's going well with that off the deck then there's not a lot wrong wi' the swing mechanics.'

i do the same with a joe powell persimmon driver but off a tee...

I only have one wood in my bag (a driver) and unless it's a really long hole will use a 1 or 2 iron for preference. In a complete reverse of standard opinion, I've never found long irons difficult to play whereas I find hybrids nigh-on impossible. However, this is one of those 'horses for courses' things. It's what right for you that matters - there's no 'correct' opinion on this issue.

I have taken 13 irons (1-LW) & putter out on a nice breezy links. 1 & 2 off the tee. Unlike all the GM professionals who can hit low 9W & 32deg rescue clubs, I cannot.

Therefore as some folk would use technology to hit the ball higher, I reversed the logic to hit it lower.

Worm: the Hogan replica is probably a 2 iron loft but my Mizuno Pro forged iron (the one I practice with) is a 2. (2 dot). This means that it was factory adjusted to a 1 iron spec & has about 12 degrees of loft.
