I recently bought a used 2 iron from a friend. After hitting it on the range, I will defiantly be putting it in the bag. Does anybody else use a 2 iron instead of a hybrid? And what are the advantages?

I use a 1 and 2 iron and have no hybrids at all. I've tried hybrids and hate them. The majority of other people will have exactly the opposite opinion. Neither side is wrong - it's simply a case of horses for courses.

I like my 2 iron because it's a great go to club when you need a low penetrating flight from the tee into the wind. Something that's hard to achieve with a hybrid. tough from the grass though ;-)

I had a 2 iron with my previous irons and could hit it pretty well from the fairway and the tee.

I tried a rescue (Callaway Heaven wood) and did not get on with it at all.

Only problem with a 2 iron is that they are next to impossible to hit cleanly from the semi.

A 2 iron is pretty useful off the tee, especially on a windy day, but pretty useless off anything but a perfect lie otherwise. Also, you need to have a good bit of power and swingspeed in order to elevate it sufficiently. For me, SS (~100mph), I hit my 2 iron about the same distance as my 3 iron, so unless its windy, theres no point carrying it.

I used to be one of those who thought that hybrids were pretty much hyped-up rubbish. But after learning how to hit it off the tee, off the fairway and out of the shit, it really does make things easier. The key ingrediant for me was to get one with a steel shaft, so it feels like an iron and therefore swing it like one.

Also, if you really want a low lauch tee and fairway weapon for a windy day, get a low lofted hybrid (~16deg) with a steel shaft. A good bit harder to hit consistently than the more common ~20deg ones, but still easier than hitting a 1 or 2 iron.

I use a Cleveland Halo Hybrid 1 iron (14 Degrees) and it is really, really easy to hit. I also have a 5 iron hybrid and I would highly recommend these clubs. Some of my mates tease me about hybrids but, if they`re good enough for the pros....

KeefT, thats really good advice. I might look into steel shafted hybrids.

I stopped using my 2 iron when I finally admitted to myself that it was going just as high as a 3 iron. Most people who i see play either hit it low or high, the clubs don't make that much difference. Players who hit it low always hit it low hybrids still go low with not much difference other than the false perception effect! You know the effect people get when they forever hear/read/wish that certain clubs do certain things!

A few rules to remember 1 degree over 200 yards is a difference of about 3 yards in height. And anybody who thinks blades and hybrids go much difference due to paraphernalia like higher CoG want to look at the differnce between there cavity back 9 iron and there bladed wedge, amazing difference I'm sure you'll agree!

It's all rubbish
I carry a 1 iron, low into the wind, , ta Donut, :O)

I have 3 Hybrids. the lowest iron I have in my bag is a 5 iron. You can drill a hybrid low off the tee - just put the ball back in your stance a shade, choke down on the club and shorten your swing. Well, it works for me. Hybrids are useful because you can get more distance than an iron on a full swing. They are more forgiving too - although it doesnt mean they will get rid of your swing faults. You can still slice them wildly etc if your swing mechanics are unsound.
