I used to run competitively in my twenties and even ran for GB a couple of times. I love playing golf am still very competitive and the handicap system gives me a chance of winning, hope still playing golf for many years to come Im 50 now.
I play basketball, tennis, soccer, table tennis, kayak, and swimming. Now I just started out with golf, it is much more difficult to learn than the other stuff that I tried. This is the only sport that I have tried that forced me to look for professional instruction.
Reminds me of a remark a work colleague once made about me - "Alan, you play lots of sports.... but are you good at any of them?". Cheeky remark, but with a kernel of truth.
I play football regularly, used to play bowls regularly in my youth, and also used to play a bit of badminton and tennis.
Golf is technically harder to learn, but if I took a random sample of 20 friends / acquaintances, even off a 20 h'cap I'd be one of the better golfers but one of the poorer footballers.
I was well into squash in my younger days and reached a respectable standard at club level, - teams etc. In sailing dinghy racing I've competed all my life from club level upto world championship, in my very competative days.
At both these sports by practicing and competing obsessively I was able to make relatively rapid progress through the ranks. - It just ain't happening with golf, I just put it down to my age, (53), but maybe it isn't!
