R&A agrees to allow more adjustability to equipment - and not just moveable weight technology.

What you think could be introduced to take advantage of this new Rule? Are we talking alignment aids, adjustable hosels, sole plates, replacement faces and grooves? Seems like the R&A has opened the door to even more moveable technology. Has it gone too far? ED

Rightio then, off to the shed then to get to work on a swivel joint to adjust loft. Think I will incorporate the ability to open or close the face at the same time. Must make sure a shaft change feature is also incorporated and as an add-on think super-quick grip change-over would be a good idea.

Best idea I have heard of. No more rip-offs. 1 basic drive joint.

Will the rule allow for the replacement of the thing at the shaft end of the club?

I like the idea of adjustability, and think its a good way forward, what bothers me is this gives all the manufactures plenty of scope to introduce all kinds of wacko ideas, some of which may actually make a slight difference, although most wont.

In the mean time we'll be told its the best thing since sliced bread, (something like the square driver hype) and prices will rise accordingly.

So business as usual, then.

Great - more stuff to adjust before realising it's my swing that is wrong and no amount of technology is going to correct that. Do we really need any more ability to make adjustments other than getting properly fitted and letting a pro do the changes for you? The rules still restrict you from altering the characteristics on the course so for 95% of the time we won't be using it.

Is this just accepting that the rules have stifled innovation in face and head design and therefore this allows manufacturers to, as previously said 'introduce all kinds of wacko ideas' and keep their sales up.

In my opinion, I think technology has hit the wall, there's very little which can be improved up with both materials, sizes, groove depths or moveable weight technologies which we dont' already have. We've seen shafts go from wood to steel to graphite - there's nothing more which can be achieved here...and that's the engine of the club.

Clubheads are now limited in size and with MWT and square drivers, it's now on the verge of being gimmicky. A grip is a grip, so no change there for making the game easier.

As for grooves, didn't we once deal with this with PING a few years ago? Now they have been limited.

Even ball technology is now limited (and I think a ball "roll back" would be a great idea to bring back some fabulous courses onto the tournament rota) so where's the next step forward in golf technology?

Like I said, I think technology...I mean a breakthrough...has hit the wall - everything else will be a variety on an already existing theme.

I'm sure the marketing people will make us try and believe something new...that's what they are paid for.

"At the end of the day, it's the indian, not the arrow"

Erm.... shouldn't that be "Native American"????

I don't disagree, Martin, although the R&A and USGA took a similar view 8 - 10 years ago, and were proved wrong. You never know what's round the corner.

It really is the biggest "non - news" I have seen in 30 years.

Golfers here in the States are somehow wrongly under the impression that this is really cool "news" and that they will have a shaft with a cool adapter on the end and walk around town trying head after head, model after model until they get the "perfect combination" and when the honeymoon is over.... they simply remove it, and start stumbling around town again.....

Problem is, there will absolutely be no two manufacturers on the planet that will have clubheads that will accept the same adapter!

So, your Aldila shaft that came out of your Ping head... will only fit into another Ping head....... as long as that model is one that accepts an adjustable shaft with adapter, and there is going to be no way to retrofit current or older models. I really do not see each new head from any manufacturer coming out in adjustable format either. A bit too radical right out of the gate.

So, OEM companies will now have their sales reps shooting around the countryside trying to sell clubs as always, now, heads/adapter ready, and a complete plethora of every manufacturer shafts available to fit "their system"... Sales reps will love it... more to talk about.

Shaft manufacturers will love it, with say, 10 companies in this market, they will be selling 10 times the shafts since folks cannot simply pull shafts and slide them into the next greatest head out there.

But I ask the average golfer...... Perhaps you guys can give me some insight....

If you buy an adjustable clubhead....

How many shafts will you buy for the time when your "gamer" goes sour on you?

How many guys buy Adjustable heads, yet never tinkered with the weights?

This might end up being the same thing, but I guess it is nice to have the option.

Mike
