Iron's are marking up

Forgetting my new years resolution for a minute (the one where I commit to no longer being a big girls bouse) I have to say I am getting upset with the condition of my new Wilson Di7's after just two rounds.

The Sandwedge has grooves right across the sole like I have played a short from Brighton Beach and some of the faces have tiny scratches (they remind me of the old 'domestos' advert with the skater).

I have polished them all up again with Brasso and they are all shiney but the marks aint going to come out.

So the question is, is there anything I can do to polish out the marks ?

I have just ordered a set of iron head covers to avoid any further damage in transit and to quell the clinking I get when walking around. (I know this shows me to be uncool but that is a hat I have worn all my life and it keeps my head warm).

This might all sound anal to you but I am sure that the irons play better the better they look .

Cheers.

Jesus! Never buy forged irons then - is all I'll say...

I would expect it with Forged Irons - anyway if I was good enough for Forged Irons - I would surely never have to use them from anything other then lovely fairway

Happytab,

I must be severely uncool as well. I have the iron covers also. I know the sort of marks you mean and they bug the hell out of me too. The best thing I have found to use is an original Scotchbrite scouring pad. Use this damp and rub in a circular motion. It does produce a rather odd smelling grey gunge, but persevere and the scratches will come out. I belive the Di7's are produced with a shiny finish, the Scotchbrite will dull this off, but I use Solvol Autosol to polish mine back again. Better check that it isn't chrome because I don't know how this would work.

Best of luck

All clubs mark up when used - get over it

... or quit playing and hang 'em on your wall to gaze at.

The chrome plating has worn completely off the sole of my Mizuno MX20 sand wedge leaving scoured and pitted bare metal.

Boo bloody Hoo!!!

It still plays great.

Happy I made the mistake of buying some new shiny TM R7 Irons and expected them to look good for longer. They looked like c**p after only 3 or 4 rounds and I was so disappointed with them I no longer use.

Take a look at the thread I started on them, it may give you a few answers. TM R7 Iron

I play with a set of forged Mizuno MP30s. I got them second hand and last year had them regripped and adjusted by my pro.  Recently, I took them home and gave them a good scrubbing, resharpened all the grooves with a little tool I got from ebay, and gave them a good rubover with an oily cloth.  They still have plenty of scratches and nicks (gives them character) but they look shiny and gleaming again. They still look much sexier than the ugly, lumpy great cavity backs most of my mates play with.

Next time buy Pings. They look like cr@p before you ever use them, so you don't need to worry

Actually, I'm a bit upset because your thread has made me check my clubs, and there are two nicks on my beautiful Mizzy lobber.

^^^^^^^^^^ heh, heh quite right Gary - some time ago I remarked that the greatest virtue of Ping clubs was that they looked old before you used 'em

My Mizuno's are still in great nick after 4 years and although the sole wear is on the sand iron and the others have got the patina of use, non are damaged, other than jingle dings and scuff marks.

I have never used iron headcovers, considering them to be for guys more in touch with their feminine side    You know - the sort of guy who buys an expensive chrome plated socket set for his car - but has to ask his wife how to use 'em.

I have Mizuno MX20's and damage is as follows:

SW - huge gouge on middle of sole and almost on to face from a bl**dy flint hidden in the bunker.

7 iron - similar from a dirty great stone hidden under the earth when "deep in the woods".

Doesn't seem to affect the playability of them, but it's just a little sad.

I'm joining the "uncool" club, as I've got iron covers too... stops the clanging together that really bugs me! There's times where I think half of Santa's reindeer are on the course with all the "jingles"!

laughable really -

you guys buy this Japanese forged tack , swoon over it like it's something special and then almost cry if it they get a few bumps & bruises

Taz, your post makes me laugh - you won't get any argument from me about being a bit feminine about taking care of my clubs - I guess it comes from not having huge amounts of money to throw around and therefore taking care of the things I buy when I do spend some.

As for the head covers - I don't know if they are a long term thing and I may get annoyed with the taking off and putting on by its worth a try if it keeps the heads in better condition.

Right, i'm off to polish my balls.

Sounds like the job for one of these

Only joking try emery cloth, should take off those little marks pretty well. nice and smooth strokes over the sole not just where the marks are. and don't do it too often. A little gun oil after you've done it would be good too.

GVI Gary - class!!!

Hmm Happytab, remember that headcovers will hold water against the clubs for longer and cause the clubs to rust?

anyway, there Wilson Di7's, there not exactly works of art are they.

Live with it, any of the emery cloth or brillo pad remedies are going to ruin your clubs.

Most of the guys I play with would pay money for their clubs to show signs of wear, if it was a small circle of rust around the sweet spot

Brasso to polish up golf clubs?! Whats the world coming to? You bought them to smash them into mud at nearly 100 miles an hour!

Rant complete, for now...

Like Bratty I have a huge nick on the sole of my PW, picked up from a flint under leaves in 'the woods'.  Gives it character.  The small scratches on your clubs gives you an insight into how and where you are hitting the ball. Try using head covers on every other club to stop the noise. Use them on the clubs most likely to stay in the bag.

When you buy new irons sholud hit a few shots of a gravel path, you soon stop worryiong about them after that

Just got some Titleist695s, throw them straight in the bag, yes look great new but soon lose that look for the traditional bag clatter blade look.

Enjoy them.

CBE: "Hmm Happytab, remember that headcovers will hold water against the clubs for longer and cause the clubs to rust?"

Nope, cast buckets don't rust!

Iv had my mizuni mp32's for about a year and a half, and they are very scratched on the face, from striking the ball. At first i thought this would ruin them, but it gives them character and i like them better a bit battered, lyk all my clubs. Accept they gunna get a bit less shiny and scratched and it wont bother u at all.

Show/hide user stats

if you do buy yourself a set of neoprene headcovers and they get wet do not leave them on your clubs overnight they will rust.

ive got my mx25's wearing them, and they think theyre lovely, keeps them toasty warm and ready to go. also stops them banging around in transit (couldnt stand the rattling any longer!)
