All credit to Today's Golfer for publishing such data. Might not be to everyones taste, but some like to see it as a guide to short-listing what balls to look at in terms of distance, wedge spin, etc.  But do those results look right to everyone? Noticed a few inconsistencies that worry me. Last year they said the Wilson Staff Tx4 Pro was the longest by 9yds..now it's not even close. Also last year they claimed the budget Warbird was higher spinning than even the Pro V1 (5702rpm vs ProV1's 5215rpm), yet it's no where near this time around.

This year they seem to be saying, the Burner TP, Srixon Soft feel and Trispeed all have more wedge spin than most premium balls? The NXT Tour and Dx2 Soft spin nearly as much as a Nike One Black? The Nike Karma, Burner, NXT Extreme, AD333, etc are all up there too? Does that sound right? Or are TG's testing methods not showing up the differences correctly? Golf Magazine in the US have also published their golf ball review, but using robot testing at 2 different swing speeds. Will be interesting to compare them to TGs results.

Disappointed that once again no Bridgestone E5/E6, let alone the new E5+/E6+. To be fair to TG, it seems Bridgestone haven't bothered to properly release them over here. But had hoped TG would still include them as they get good reviews in the US for mid-priced golf balls.

It would've been interesting if they'd have tested the Inesis TD tour to compare them against the premium balls.

Any such data is fundementally flawed as it was carried out by a "Pga pro". Half of them would struggle to break 80, let alone put several hundred consistent swings together. An Iron Byron test is the only way to make such a comparison.

Let's just take a look at one example. The HX Hot driver data is "268yds 1904rpm" and the TP Black is "269yds 2864rpm". So a one yard difference but a huge difference in spin rate. Doesn't make sense at all.

Its TG, they most likely just made the whole thing up anyway.

You mean a PGA pro who can hit a PW over 125 yards average cannot hit driver further than 265 yards average - I don't believe it!

......perhaps they should have asked some of the handicap golfers from this forum to do the test

Speaking as someone with a modest stats background, without knowing the standard deviation within groups it is impossible to tell whether the difference between any two sample groups is significant (ie whether it implies a real-world difference in performance).

What that means is that there might be just as much variability between one group of - what did they count, six hits? - and the next just by natural variation of swing, strike etc as there is because of using different balls. Maybe if they'd used all ProV1s and just made up names for each group, you'd see the same sort of pattern. That would certainly explain why the relative rankings of different balls across the two years' tests is not consistent.

For, example, I tossed different coins six times each and got the following results:

£2: 2 heads 4 tails 

£1: 3 heads, 3 tails

50p: 3 heads 3 tails

20p: 5 heads 1 tail

10p: 2 heads 4 tails

I therefore conclude that if you want a head, you should in general use a seven-sided coin rather than a round one. Absolute rubbish, of course, but a desperate hack could get an article out of it.

hope they took an average of a number of shots. These ball tests are a load of balls , my advice find a ball that suits you're all round game , something not about distance though .

Played with a guy recently (23 handicap) who was losing balls on every holes , i can honestly say he pulled a different ball out of his bag everytime he lost one.

When i commented on this , he said he buys bags of lakeballs from a well known sports shop as he knows he will be losing about 5-10 balls a round and can't afford to buy new.

I use Callway HX Tour and buy them from ebay , last purchase £5.30 + £3.00 P+P , for pearl grade.
