I'm an 18 handicapper, long off the tee, but a bit wayward
My girlfriend ordred me a new Ping g10 driver with a custom shaft option for Christmas and I've just been told that they've messed up the order so she's getting her money back.
Any advice on what alternative I could go for if not the g10? I've got a G2 10 deg stiff aldilla 65 shaft which has done me good up to now.

Seeing as you say your slightly wayward have you considered one of the new square drivers?

What do/dont you like about your current driver? You need to consider if the launch is right for you. You could go for a higher/lower loft. Although most people suggest you use as much loft as you can handle. Also, what shaft is right for you? You say your long off the tee but wayward. You might want to consider a heavier shaft. Most importantly is to get yourself on a launch montior to find your swing speed and launch angle.

If you can, get to a place that has the full fitting facilities, such as the Ping Fitting Cart (has differen't loft driver heads and lots of shaft choice), the same goes for TaylorMade, Callaway and Nike are also bringing something along these lines this month too. Means you can try out up to 80 differen't shafts with lots of differen't loft heads, when combined with a nice calm day at a long range (not indoor net) and a launch monitor (so you can see the monitor isn't telling porky pies due to it being set up wrongly etc) you should be able to find a good combination of head/shaft to suit your swing.

I'll have to get me one of them ....... girlfriends The Mizuno MX600 is causing a stir - and you can dial out 'wayward' - allegedly

cheers kefkef
is there one in the south east?
|
 |
taz - it works both ways - lovely to get a new club, even better to be allowed the time to use it.
got a kid on the way now so i'm looking to get out as much as possible before my golfing life ends for a few years

Get a deal on a G5 and with the left over money buy something else! I have tried the R7 and Burner and am a big fan of both. Burner seems a bit longer but as you said you hit long but wayward my choice would be an R7 which you can then adjust to a fade/draw bias to straighten out the wayward ones!

Wexham Park near Slough has a launch monitor.

Where in the South East are you Dave?

all good advice, thanks
steve, i'm in camden

If you are wayward off the tee, then trust me, you wont fix it by shelling out lots of money on the latest driver.

Hi Dave, Try the new Cleveland Hi Bore this is a very good club. Our pro shop has the computerised Vectra System which give you launch angle slice spin hook spin and direction. I tried the G10,The New Calaway and the Cleveland Hi Bore. The information showed that I was getting a better launch angle, straighter shots and more distance form the Cleveland than the other clubs. You should always try to trial a club before you buy as what suits one person may not suit another due swing characteristics. Regards Keith

I hate Ping drivers for the simple reason they come 1" longer than anything else out there (apart from the Burner). If your like me and can barely keep the ball on the fairway with a Driver, i'd give them I wide berth. I currently have a Superquad and its pretty good if not anything amazing - seems forgiving, doesn't look to MASSIVE, and doesn't sound like your smashing plates over your head.

My driving makes me feel like smashing plates over my head... But my Adams BUL 500 has helped to disguise my wicked slice if not eliminate it.

Dave. Forget the make of driver; it's the make of the shaft that is important, not the clubhead, so if you liked the aldila shafts, (as do i), then look around for a driver with the same or a similar shaft, and dont buy until you have tried it. Good hunting (great fun if you have the time and the patience).

We are in Tooting, so anywhere I can recommend with full fitting facilities will be too much of a hike unfortunately. If you can find somewhere that has full facilities and a wide selection of clubs, simply try as many as you can to narrow your choice. Then you could see whether you can refine this choice any further by having a fitting. My son followed a similar process, initially by selecting clubs based on recommendation and by what appealed to his personal preference in head shape. He then tried a number, on different occasions, finally narrowing his selection to three. Then also tried a number of clubs that didn't appeal visually (square ones!), just in case he was missing something, but discarded those immediately. He then picked the one that performed the best for him.
