Hi, I have been reading a lot recently about irons that give you a more penetriting trajectory. I recently bought some new irons which hit the ball as long as I need but tend to hit the ball very high. Nobody mentioned trajectory to me during the fitting process. So, aspart from the obvious fact that if its windy I can't play, what else does a more penetrating ball flight give you? Can someone explain as I am paranoid I bought the wrong clubs !

Happytab, A more penetrating ball flight helps you to play into the wind, by keeping the ball down and below the wind. You tend to get more roll from a lower trajectory, but not always more distance. If you are playing in damp conditions you can loose a lot of distance from a low trajectory, better to have a high flight and longer carry through the air. You can stop the ball better with a highter trajectory because of the soft landing. If you are hitting the ball as 'long as I need' then don't worry. You can always play he ball in the back of your stance if you need to keep it down into the wind.

Happy, learn to play a punch shot and the wind wont bother you too much

I have never really worked that one out - the punch shot I mean - can anyone explain how to pull off the punch shot ?

Dont go hitting a punch shot into wind, the ball will spin too much. Play a knock-down shot.

Ok, it's a knock-down shot I was talking about - semantics. How to play it? Everyones different, but for me it's a case of moving the ball slightly back in my stance, making a wider but shorter backswing and curtailing the followthrough. Not a lot more too it other than swinging easier.

I agree with the above.....very important to take at least another club and swing easy. Hit it too hard and the spin will cause the ball to rise too quickly. Keep the hands slightly forward of the clubface for as long as you can and concentrate on a ball then divot strike.

No it isn't semantics, they are two different shots. A punch shot will get you into trouble in the wind whereas a knock-down shot is your friend. If you are going to volunteer advice then please get it correct

To use clubs that give you a penetrating flight you need to be a good ball striker, as you will need spin to control it onto greens. Hitting the ball high is fine for most players, you can get the ball to stop without a crisp down and through strike, so the club is working for you and helping your game. If you are hitting the ball long enough to pay well and the ball is stopping don't worry about it. You have bought the wrong clubs if you are losing distance, thats all, and you can tell if your irons all go similar distances and there isn't much gap between them. Example, if your 7 iron goes 140 and each club lower is ten yards longer, so the 5 is say 160, then its no issue whatsoever.
