I'm looking for decent performance, obviously, but also something that's going to last more than a dozen rounds before being useless. What do you guys recommend?

I use those yellow Footjoy soft spikes (as in the advert to the right) all year round.

do you know if they come in 6mm screw thread version, Tim?

I'm afraid I've no idea. Once a year I hand my shoes into the pro shop and leave them with them for re-spiking. Anyone else know?

I use stingers, had my current shoes about 30 rounds and are still usable (although need replacing).

I'm going to get some plain stingers and some stinger pro's with the spikes to swap around depending on the weather.

Thanks guys

Have a look here

They show the spikes I mean and the different threads they come in.

My vote goes to Stingers as well. Have 2 pairs of shoes, one with Stingers in and one with Black Widows. Find that the Stingers last much longer and give more grip. The tips of the Black Windows, I find, can sheer off after only 2 or 3 rounds.

Thanks again

Stingers for me now too. Black Widows I found clogged up too quickly and as Greg says the tips break off easily. Stingers are available in all 4 different fittings.

Don't get the metal spikes with the 3 yellow plastic teeth either side of the main spiggot - they fall/pull out quicker than an Eastender's love triangle!

That depends on the fitment Chris. I've had the pro stingers in my Nike for about 18 months now and none have fallen out. Of course the threaded spikes may fall out easier but the Qloc ones I have are very good.

Good i`m glad your all for the stingers, just bought 2 boxes of 20 for £12 on ebay, I`ve fitted them to my 2 pairs of footjoys Lt`s.  Cant wait to try them out. heard good things about them.

The Pro Stingers are AWESOME! Best spike by far. You just have to make sure they are in tight, forget all this quick-lok rubbish, screw the buggers well down. They last for ages, give more grip than sh*t on a blanket, and are readily available now.

The Pro,s are the best by far, BUT you can not beat real studs. I have them in both of my classics as I find anything else attracts more grass.

John - the Pro Stingers ARE real metal studs. The Stingers are the plastic version, the Pro STinger are the metal spike version. Give them a try!

I had them stingers (assuming they're the long black center spiggot which yellow side grabber prongs????) put in my FJ AquaShites which uses one of these q-loc, q-link or Q-Bert fittings & they fell out like a wild west saloon owner's teeth!

The pro stuck 'em in initially & I stuck em in subsequently at the rate of 1 - 2 per round. Now they would have to support my fat-ass lumbering around and cope with the dolomite hard-core which passes for path filler at my course but even so I was a tad disappointed. My (sleeping) partner also had them in his Etonic shoes which were a different type of Q-Bert fitting & he suffered the same problem. Now while I may be the size of a minor planet, he couldn't cover Kelly's Eye!

Yes the grip was superb but I gave up after I ran out of them after getting back to the car only to see that the soles of my shoes resembled Harold Steptoe's Dad's smile!

I still use metal spikes but just the vanilla single stud ones & thus far not one has fell out. In fact it was a pliers job to take the older ones out to replace them.

Chris - you and your pro aint putting them in right me old mate. I found that myself first time I put them in, came back with 4 of the buggers missing. Twist them in, then twist some more, then a bit extra for luck. Been using them since they first came out in the USA which is maybe 18 months and lost 1 stuf since then. Oh, and in case you are thinking the extra twisting them in locks them in for life, that isnt the case, I changed mine last week and struggled no more than with usual studs and less than those crappy black widow POS things. Be a man Chris, get some oompphh into it!

Creo - I have had 2 sets of the pro Stinger. Liked the pro stud but they still had grass stuck inbetween the studs. Just had a bolt of lightning hit me about shoe sizes I am a 7 if you have LARGER feet and  the same model then studs on mine are closer togther so the grass is more liklety to get stuck between the soft spikes.

I also have smallish feet John, its a sign of good breeding Size 8.5. I have never really found the grass clogging an issue. Compared to placky studs they dont clog, any grass build up is very manageable in my experience. And its nice not slipping, falling and breaking limbs.
