Anybody know where I can pick up a decent driver head at a fair price. I've got an Aldila VS Proto shaft lying about and I'd like to make myself a new driver. Checked ebay out but it's mostly gash on there. Components are really hard to find here, unlike the states but the shipping makes that option a no goer.

You have to be lucky on eBay - and know what you want. There is a lot of 'gash' but occassionally something good turns up. Component heads are not as cheap as they used to be from suppliers - sometimes it is cheaper to buy a complete club from a lesser known brand - complete with the shaft described.

You can get cheap s/h components (OEM and “Component” (e.g. Wishon, Geek))  from USA via forums – I can give you links. Only issue is convincing sellers to send over here.

It’s actually worthwhile buying new from there too if you need supplies like shafts, grips, ferrules epoxy etc. ‘Cos by the time you buy all of them separately via ebay, with all of the individual P&P’s.....

Be sure to specify USPS rather than UPS – less risk to get picked out by customs for duty.

My favourite site is GolfWorks ‘cos they sell the great range of Maltby heads. Solid well designed stuff.

“Component” stuff tends to fall into categories – A-list stuff like Wishon, Nakashima,Infiniti etc, B-list like Maltby, Acer (via Hireko), and thenthere's C-list...

For feedback and reviews on high end try the USA forums, for reviews of B& C list try golfreview.com.

By the by: I have an Adams BUL5000 (the current model) head for sale. 10.5deg, vgc, no headcover. Would be £65 incl a ferrule and the P&P to UK.

I have a couple of heads at the moment

Makser AS 460 Forged 11 degree

and Final 10 degree square head

Looking for £30 for either head.

BTW both clubs have head covers.

Andrew, I liked the look of the Golfworks site, if you have bought stuff from them before do you know their shipping costs to the UK? I would only be buying heads.

What do you consider to be a 'fair price' for a quality component head?

Is there anything particular you have your eye on? Size? Loft?

I can pick up a decent manufacturer's driver, new, on ebay for less than £50 so I wouldn't want to pay much more than that. As far as loft goes, nothing under 10.5 as I like a bit of loft on my driver.

Answer to the original question… if you’re lucky and find another club builder with something decent and in good condition that suits lying around.  Will look tomorrow but don't think can help?

As you have found the whole thing is a pain in the UK and a well discussed issue over many years.  Bought from the US on few occasions but all becomes a bit of a pain and with P&P you don’t really make much saving, if any.  What I would consider to be a decent driver head will cost, in the UK, between £60 & £80 which I buy from Golfsmith, Diamond Golf or Midas Golf.  If you purchase from the US then go in the direction of www.myostrichgolf.com – you won’t go far wrong here.

I was watching one of the lastest from TM, a TM R7 CGB driver club head on Ebay, not that long back, and just the head not the shaft which was broken off a few inches above the head, and the darn thing went for just under£140! Ok you got the head cover and wrench but £140 odd quid!

A brand new one would have been what, only about a £100 quid more, and for that you'd  be assured its genuine if bought from a local shop and with a guarantee, I was amazed it went for that kind of money, still what do I know!
