Re-fitting Irons with graphite shafts - worth it?

I have a practice set of Irons doing not much and have been thinking about fitting them with graphite shafts. Will there be any significant change in performance?

They are MD superstrongs with Balistic rifle shafts (reg) - my swingspeed is slow at around 80mph and anywhere near 150-160 I pull out the 6 iron.

I might just get the 6 iron re-fitted as an experiment and to keep the cost down.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

Kevin,

First welcome to the forum.

I would suggest you just get the 6i re-fitted.

The difference between the weight of a steel shaft and a graphite can be between 30 - 50 grams and you will notice that difference.

I have a friend who has a set of graphite shafted clubs that he takes out in the spring every year and tries them out. Every year, so far, he has put them back in the garage for another year. They are too light for him and as a result he cannot control the ball.

So, get the 6i re-fitted and if you like it get the others done, if not, just put it away for another year.

Yeah - it would be silly to get the whole set done only to find I can't hit the damned things.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the actual shaft make? Or any to avoid?

My recommendation would be to rent/beg/steal/borrow a set of graphite irons and see how you get on with them. Or at least try and hit a demo one.

try ebay u can always get a decent iron to try for £10 - £15

just out of interest how much would it cost you to change them all over to graphites?

It can be this cheap to buy the parts

My ad, shameful plug I know. If you are interested just email me.

Personally I would go with changing just one club only and try before doing them all.

Jim - just a point - are you sure they are .350 parallel and not standard iron .370 parallel?

It's just that with my recent club building I thought irons only came in taper or .370 and woods in .350 (T.M.) or .335 standard and tour.

Taz

Thanks for pointing out the error  (probably why they have not sold)

I think Md irons are 355 taper tip, just like most OEM's I usually ream them out to take a 370 paralell shaft, much greater choice

Regarding the change over, I know of someone, a low handicapper with a fairly hard swing, who recently changed from DG S300s to 85g graphite shafts in his irons and has dropped his average score by a few strokes as well as winning a couple of comps since Xmas.

He doesn't consider a coincidence so maybe give it a try and see how you get on.

I have just bought a Yonex cyberstar ex demo 6 iron off ebay which has a graphite shaft.

99p + postage = result.

Will let you know how it performes.
