hello

bought a new set of G10's recently, and have been struggling ever since.

the fitting was excellent, and the pro used the 7 iron as PING say that is the club to be fitted with.  i hit the G10's better than all the other clubs i tried, but when i got them and started hitting the lower irons i noticed just how much offset there is!

i used to use a beautiful set of Mizuno MP30 which are basically muscle back irons with practically no offset what so ever, but i needed to get somethign a little more forgiving as i don't practice any more.

i went for the G10's as its reputation and club reviews claim it is the best around at present, and it certainly felt the part - or the 7 iron did!!!

the 3-6 irons are shocking as i hook the ball on average 30 yards - i was on a par 3 180 yard hole on saturday hitting ball after ball out of bounds (4 iron) - refusing to move until i had managed to get at least one of the little buggers straight!!!!!!  in the end i had to club down to an 8 iron to move on.........put 8 in a row out of bounds - losing 7 of them!!!!

yea ok, stupid i know, but it wasn't going to beat me!!!!!!!!!!!  and yes i know.....it did!!!!

i feel a little hard done by only testing the 7iron, as the offset on the other clubs is considerable in comparison.  however part of me admits it is probably my own fault for not getting to another shop to look over the 3-6 irons to check its offset.

I was wondering if anyone out there has had similar problems, and if so how did you resolve this.

was the pro shop helpful, allowing returns or changes to the clubs?

any help would be grateful.

desperate......don't want to waste my money!!!!

I doubt you could reduce their offset much by bending (you may break them with no warranty to fall back on, even if Ping do it ) so my guess would be to either swop them with someone who habitually slices the ball or flog them. In addition, bending the heads changes the bounce and you could end up with irons that dig too much, as well as dynamic loft issues affecting your trajectory.

It seems plain wrong that Ping advise fitting with a 7i. This has too much loft and corrective spin, which will mask the true ball flight from your swing. A 6i would be better but no way I would shell out serious coin without hitting PW, 6i and 3i at the very least... If the fitting Centre/Pro wont let you....walk away. Many of us try each others golf gear down the driving range. There are so many guys with new gear all the time and nobody ever refuses. Likewise you have to trust sometimes that your driver doesnt get skied There is no better way to try gear out without feeling any pressure to shell out £600, just to keep some fitter happy, IF you are not quite convinced.

Try writing to ping Rhys with a compliant against whoever done the custom fit.I doubt they would be too pleased

have managed to get an re-fitting appointment after complaining to the pro shop where i bought them and they are going to look at the fitting and see if they got the shaft wrong, etc.

contacted ping and they refuse to accept a return - thats up to the shop that sold them, whcih is fair enough.

i wasn't given much choice of whcih club i was trying to be honest, and i must admit some guilt for not asking for the longer irons to see what sort of offset it had.

really disappointed with this though as i was not advised of the dramtic difference between the long to mid irons. and yes i know i could of researched them before i went to try them, but still, surely i should of been told that the offset would increase the longer the club!?

fingers crossed they can help as it seems like i maybe stuck with them!

You must hit with a natural draw to hit so much hook even with that much offset, at your handicap you would naturally make some sub-concious adjustments, there will more to this than just offset.  Shafts probably, maybe you woudl be batter with some cavity backs with zero offset and shafts you can control.

that is what i went in asking for - a cavity backed iron i can continue to use without too many adjustments to my swing, grip etc as i am comfortable with my game.

i needed the extra forgiveness as i no longer practice as my daughter takes up most of my spare time, so thought that a change from muscle backs to cavity was the logical step!

normally have stiff shaft on my irons but he said i needed regular, so went for regular.....

be interesting what the fitter says tomorrow!!!!

Did you try the i10's? They have less offset than G10's - could be you've got the wrong model. I was fitted  for i10's with the AWT stiff shaft and am enjoying them - the shaft is great. Anyway best of luck for tomorrow and don't forget to try a few different irons if possible

i tried the i10's and hit them well but the pro said the G10's were the most forgiving so i went for them.

having done a bit more research on the ping range now, i realise i have gone for the wrong model and am praying that they have some sort of returns policy in place allowing for this.

i will then get the i10's as i am used to the minimal offset....fingers crossed!!!

i can't believe how dumb i have been - ping's website shows the full specs of theclubs which include the offset....if only i had looked at the long irons or even their website first!!!!!!!!!

thanks sumo, hopefully it will go ok tomorrow or you may find some brand new G10's on ebay!!!

the fitter didnt check or ask you the line you swing the club on ?

dont blame youreself   you should have been told

you can still get cavity irons but with no or minimal offset

line of swing ,and attack angle determine which clubs will work far more than the players handicap - its the main reason people screw up  when they hit a certain handicap and feel they should use "better players clubs"

if your lines dont change  then  neither should the clubs

thanks for the info and the fitter didn't measure for the offset and only said that the G10's were the perfect forgiving club despit emy swing.

went there today and had a chat with a different fitter to make sure of the measurements, and was the same as the other guy so can't complain about that.

i was also given a free lesson to make sure it was me rather than the clubs and adjusted a few things whcih made a big difference.

they have no returns policy and i would probably lose a load of cash if i traded them despite them being so new, and despite my earlier posts i am quite happy with them.

probably over reacted a little to be honest so will be practicing a bit over the coming weeks to make sure i adjust to a set of clubs that are fit for me!!!

thanks for the advice and info guys.....
