Last night at the driving range I yet again started to toe my clubs and the AP1's are slowly becoming rather dull than shinny . My friend came up who I have given my old clubs to (the blades) but once I grabbed hold of them the small heads looked so much better and about the first 5-6 shots I hit were like an arrow and I was hitting a 9 iron as far as my new 6 iron. how does that work like!

Im not getting used to these irons still struggling with them and not seeming to get good distance with them.

Hi Kieron,

Just out of interest why did you change clubs? Did you get fitted for your new ones?

Show/hide user stats
Keiron, Its a weird one isn't it - I am having regrets about my club choice too - I think I changed too much too soon without knowing my game and what it needed. Persevere mate - the clubs are good quality and you had them fitted right ?

kieron- still got my callaway x18s for sale if your interested

You still got hold of them might see if someone else is intrested like . What was price again like you thinking of wanting. The clubs I got are totally standard at the moment but can get them fitted as my game changes. The old blades I believe must of had 0 offset and curved sole.

Called Wilson blue seal curved sole or something. Anyone used them before and what were they like. As for my clubs yes they top quality but starting to become not now lol. I mean my ball went in lateral water hazard but it was full of mud so there is me fishing for my ball with my PW forgetting its my new clubs and felt something scratching the club face and ouch what a mess its left !

Kieron - What shafts do you have fitted to your titleist irons. If they are dynamic golf then that may well be your problem. They are much much too heavy for the vast majority of golfers but unfortunately are fitted as stock shafts to many OEM clubs as they are cheap. If you are going to spend that kind of money on clubs it is better to get a proper custom fit as there are enough unscrupulous sellers out there (including pro shops) who will recommend DG in R300 or S300 simply because that is all they have in stock. As has been discussed many times "stiff" and "regular" mean nothing but is virtually all the pro shops sell. Try buying a driver with anything but the stock shaft in the stock length and its always the same "oh with your swing you need a stiff shaft" and unfortunately its the same with irons. If you bought them from a reputable club shop or AGD, Navada Bobs etc I would personally take them back and ask it you could try something more suitable and let him know you may have been mis-sold the clubs. If they don't suit you then the person recommending them can shoulder some of the blame.

Good luck but it sound like you may have learned a harsh lesson about shiny new clubs.

Hey kieron if you don't want those shiny new Titleists i'll swap you for my careworn 06' Big Berthas I'll even chuck in a 19* wilson DH6 hybrid! What do you say SWAPSIES?

Well I went out last night and really enjoyed my iron play on a whole. The couple of par 3's  totally lost it and put it well to the left. Around 20 yards left of the fairway. One of the Par 3's drew it a little and ended up to the left of the pin but on the green. After a smashing drive (2nd one ) I was 175 short of green so used a 5 Iron and hit the ball well and landed on the green first time ever on hole 9 GIR its S.I. 1 too.

So as for swapping I believe I just need a bit more time with them. As for shafts yes they dynamic gold and they feel very heavy but so did the shafts in the X-20's which I used a little before buying them and found them ok after practice so I think I just need to get a few good rounds under my belt with them. Playing on driving range is useless I believe only way forward is to hit 9 holes 3 times a week.

Don't know your handicap but unless it is less than 5 you will always struggle with a heavy shaft like DGs. They weigh in at about 125 grammes where the better lightweight shafts are now often between 75 and 100. Does not sound like a lot but in a steel shaft for a handicap player it is a hge difference.

Well im only a beginneer so it will make a big difference. But I am defo getting used to them though. Dont really want to think about getting them re-shafted now really if im getting better with them. Not sure what shafts were in the Callaway X-20's standard but they felt a heavy club but played fine with them after a given time so that is all im waiting for in these clubs!

Kieron - there is a lot of difference between a club feeling heavy and having a heavy shaft. Swingweight is what makes a club feel heavy. A club can have a light shaft but a high swingweight and vice versa. The problem is a shaft like DG was designed some 20 years ago specifically for the needs of a professional golfer. As a newcomer to the game they are without doubt the wrong shafts for you. With the wrong shafts you will lose distance, hit the ball on the wrong trajectory - probably way too low and with a left to right flightpath. If you have to play a lower loft to get to a green then you will not stop the ball and hitting a green is more good luck than good management. If you are hitting the right clubs you should still be hitting the ball high enough to leave a pitchmark even with the longer clubs. Unfortunatly you cannot get used to a set of clubs that are not right for you, all you will do is play to correct the bad shot you are going to play with them, for example aiming left to counteract the slice or taking more club to reach the green. I would not like to talk you nto changing clubs so soon but seek the advice of a pro. For a £20 half hour lesson could save a lot in the long run.

I get lessons every other week and when ever im getting lessons I do tend to hit the ball much better and straight. Last night I choose a 5 Iron because I was behind the 150 markers about 10 yards so 160 with 5 is about right so I was told and wham hit the green and it just went left of flag because I had a tree in front of me and had to aim left a little. It was just on some of the Par 3's where I had a tiny tee showing I tended to have a hook really. Not sure why? closing the face maybe?

Im not losing distance apart from when the shot aint as good a contact as I know it should be by sound feel etc and the divot size etc. Im using a soft ball as well (Srixon ZUR-C) Would this effect my play much?

Hi Kieron, do you find it's mostly down the range though that you have trouble with your new clubs? I met a mate down at my old range on Monday evening for a beer and a bucket of balls, just took my new 7 iron, Pitching wedge and driver. The tee was either too long or too short for my driver and my iron shots off the deck were awful but then playing on a course on Wednesday my 7 iron was lovely again.. perhaps you, like me are for some reason having problems hitting it off the driving range mats.. at least it's better this way round!
Show/hide user stats
Well I play off grass at driving range but grass is not brilliant where you hit off as everyone hits off there etc. Tend to hit a little better off the mats. Not sure I think I just need to practice few shots on practice range and then hit course!

hook - ball too far forward in your stance? Turning hands over too soon?

Show/hide user stats

Ok cheers that mind just be it actually because I been moving it forward but is that really bad? I mean moving it back de lofts club etc and much steeper approach which I use alot ith LW not so much with 4-8. You think I should just always keep ball in middle of stance always?

Show/hide user stats
The stance should vary according to the club, shorter the club further back in the stance and the more open the stance. Wedge an inch or two behind center and progressing fwd 1/2- 3/4 inch or so per club. Hogans five fundamentals has a good diagram of positions.
Show/hide user stats
Well I get 6 in the middle or jsut a tiny bit towards back foot. Then move forward flighty in my stance. But only having a 5 and 4 iron it only moves up by a little bit. I must of had it more than an inch forward on that silly par 3.
